Florham Park – So what went down today at Jets Training Camp? Here are some Website Whispers to take you behind the scenes . . .
Above, you see the Jets’ players running “gassers” as punishment for a sluggish practice . . .
Here is a problem that Geno Smith needs to work on.
He likes to see guy’s flash open before he throws.
That works on some route, like over the short middle, but on sideline out-routes this approach can be dangerous. Those throws need to be tossed based on timing and anticipation. It’s too dangerous to wait on these routes.
And we saw the results today on two sideline out routes delivered late – pick sixes by Darrelle Revis and Marcus Williams.
When asked about these plays, Todd Bowles said, “”The DBs made good plays. They get paid money too. I was starting to think they couldn’t catch.”
Good job by the coach turning a negative situation into a positive by praising his defensive backs for their work on these two plays.
But honestly, they weren’t good throws. They were telegraphed and late . . .
The Jets worked on returning and covering free kicks after safeties today . . .
Ryan Fitzpatrick had one of those passes today that used to frustrate Buffalo fans. He threw into heavy coverage to Saalim Hakim about 20 yards down the left seam. It was nearly picked by Marcus Williams (who is having a heck of a camp).
Sometimes Fitzpatrick seems to forget his own arm limitations and tries to force balls into tight windows that perhaps he doesn’t have the velocity to complete.
But on the flipside, I give the guy a little credit; he doesn’t play in fear . . .
Bowles was raving about backup ILB Erin Henderson today. If he has his off-the-field issues under control, this is looking like a heck of a signing. The guy is a good football player – instinctive, tough and mobile.
In Henderson and Jabari Lattimore, the Jets could have a quite a pair of backup inside linebackers. Joe Mays is also a good veteran backup ILB, but I think Henderson and Lattimore have a slight edge on him for the backup jobs . . .
Calvin Pryor has been very quiet in coverage in camp, not making a ton of plays. Today, he stepped up a little.
He had a defensed passes on a two crossing routes to Quincy Enunwa.
He seems to be getting more comfortable in the Jets’ new system. Two playbooks in two years can be tough on a young player. The Jets other starting safety, Marcus Gilchrist, a cerebral young veteran, has been a good mentor/teacher for Pryor . . .
When the Jets went to their nickel package at one point today, they went with a two-man line of Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams. These are two athletic freaks who are an ideal combo to rush the passer on third down . . .
The Jets backup offensive line, left to right – Ben Ijalana, Dakota Dozier, Wesley Johnson, Brian Winters and Brent Qvale.
I feel bad for Oday Aboushi. He went from starting last year under the old regime, to a third-string guard as of right now. This could change, but it’s not looking great for him.
But if he gets cut, I think Rex Ryan would be very interested in his services up in Buffalo.
