A lot has taken place over the last week.
Let’s take a 30,000 foot view of what has taken place.
The first move we heard about was on March 11, when ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Josina Anderson announced the Jets were trading a fifth-round pick to Oakland for offensive guard Kelechi Osemele and a sixth-round pick.
Look, no team is going to trade a guard in his prime, who made the Pro Bowl in 2016 and 2017, if there wasn’t an issue (in their minds).
JC has learned, the Raiders feel Osemele quit on them last year, missing five games with a toe injury. They didn’t think he should have missed that much time.
We will ask Osemele’s side of this story when we get a chance to talk to him one-on-one.
When healthy, he’s a top-shelf NFL guard.
They then went out and grabbed slot receiver Jamison Crowder, a free agent who spent his first four NFL seasons with the Washington Redskins.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network announced the signing and the Duke-product receiving a three-year for $28.5 million.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced Crowder will earn $17 million guaranteed.
This is what his coach in Washington said about him:
“He’s got great quickness in intermediate routes, can separate, has good hands, he’s tough, he’s physical in the running game,” Jay Gruden said. “There is really not anything that Jamison can’t do. You look at his size and say he’s little, but he plays big.”
He gives the Jets super-quick slot receiver who can win quickly with his great short-area quickness and cutting ability. The only concern here for the Jets and their fans should be durability. Crowder is a small player by NFL standards at 5-9, 177 pounds and is coming off a serious ankle injury that caused him to miss seven games.
Slot receivers work the middle of the field a lot and take a lot of big hits and he’s a small player. Jets fans need to keep their fingers crossed. When healthy, he’s a terrific slot receiver who creates a lot of mismatches.
On March 12, Rapoport announced Jets were signing Baltimore Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosley to a five-year, $85 million deal with $51 million guaranteed.
The Ravens loved this player and desperately wanted him back, and offered him in the $14-15 million range. The Jets went to $17 with more guaranteed money. This show you how bad Gang Green wanted him.
This guy is a complete inside linebacker who plays the run and pass with equal proclivity.
Mosley has great instincts with very sophisticated eyes. Mosley and Avery Williamson will give the Jets one of the better pair of 3-4 inside linebackers in football, and will make it very tough to run up the middle on the Jets moving forward. Running up the middle against he Jets wasn’t hard the last couple of years.
So the Jets came out of the gates adding two multiple Pro Bowlers in Osemele and Mosley, along with a top-shelf slot receiver who is going to help Sam Darnold a great deal with this quick wins against defenders.
We will continue our 30,000 foot view of the Jets additions on Tuesday.
