Cortland – The Jets are back to work in their home, away from home, in “The Crown City,” – Cortland, and here are a truckload of practice notes from this morning’s practice . . .
While he has almost no chance at making the roster, this kid Marcus Dowtin has talent.
He had two nice plays in a row.
He stopped Terrence Ganaway close to the line, and then blitzed, and got a QB pressure . . .
Joe McKnight has added 15 pounds, and he’s running with more power . . .
In the passing game today, Jeff Cumberland was featured a great deal. The quarterbacks love throwing to him because he always gets nice separation.
He’s a mismatch for most linebackers, with his sub-4.5 speed.
The Jets have a major quandary here.
They love what Cumberland can do as a receiving tight end, but can they trust him to handle the blocking responsibilities of the #2 TE spot? Right now he’s inconsistent, as you saw in Cincinnati.
And if they don’t trust him to handle the blocking just yet, they will have to sign a blocking tight end, and keep four players at the position – Dustin Keller, Cumberland, Josh Baker (TE-FB) and a waiver claim (or trade) late in camp. This would make them keep one less player at another position, perhaps linebacker . . .
Josh Mauga seemed to get hurt, but willed himself to continue.
You have no choice with Mr. Injury Settlement himself, Mike Tannenbaum, in charge . . .
Quinton Coples continued his impressive play from the game, beating D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and forcing Mark Sanchez to scramble . . .
The Jets stretched before practice with the Rick Ross tune – “These haters can’t hold me back,” blasting in the background.
This is a great motivational song for the Jets, because they certainly have a lot of haters out there – non-believers . . .
Mark Sanchez was way off to a wide open Cumberland over the middle.
You gotta make this throw.
It seems when Sanchez seems somebody flash open, he rushes the throw a little, and this messes up his mechanics.
Shortly after this play, Tebow threw high to Bilal Powell, it went off the running back’s hand, and it was picked off by DeMario Davis . . .
Matt Kroul is really coming on as an interior lineman.
In the OL-DL rushing drill, he did a great job of locking up Kenrick Ellis on consecutive plays . . .
David Harris had PD’s on both Dustin Keller and Cumberland over the middle . . .
A near fight between guard Terrence Campbell and NT Martin Tevaseu.
But MTV got out of there quickly. He knew it would be a bad career move.
If these two got into a fight, Rex might have made them run to the Syracuse Airport.
Campbell has had a few of these chippy situations. He plays with an edge . . .
Eron Riley continues to have a very good camp. He caught a nice mid-range out from Tebow . . .
Greg McElroy continues to display a better than advertised arm. He had one of the best passes of the day, a pretty deep out to Stephen Hill over safety Josh Bush . . .
Tons of guys blew off the media today.
I’m personally don’t care. I really don’t. but just think there is something going in this clubhouse – there seems to be of a level of disdain for the press I haven’t seen around here in a while . . .
One of the guys refusing to talk today was Matt Slauson.
I don’t blame him. The pay cut the Jets made him take was unnecessary and a major slap in the face. He should be pissed . . .
In the photo above, Tim Tebow is talking to a couple of Filipino Jets fans after practice. He did speak a little in Tagalot, the language in The Philippines. He was born there, and his family does a lot of charity work in the country.
