Time for Dan’s Jets minicamp notes . . .
Defensive end Henry Anderson looked good out there today. He’s very smart and technically sound. He shot into the backfield a couple of times to disrupt plays. He’s really going to help the Jets this year. Trading a seventh round pick the Indianapolis Colts for him looks like a steal . . .
Josh McCown said today that a real positive about Sam Darnold is “he doesn’t make the same mistake twice.”
That is a huge for a player looking to move up the learning curve on a daily basis.
And while I don’t get too much into evaluating quarterbacks in spring practices since they can’t be touched, I do see a player that is improving and getting more comfortable. And that is what the spring is all about. Not stats or style points, but learning and improving and he’s definitely doing that . . .
Doug Middleton, who missed last season after suffering an arm injury in the preseason, was starting today for Marcus Maye (who is rehabbing an ankle injury), and the Appalachian State product look good out there. He’s really smart and instinctive and is super-tough. He does a nice job of lining people up.
The Jets’ safety room is looking talented and deep with Jamal Adams, Maye, Terrence Brooks, newly-acquired J.J. Wilcox and Middleton.
Good group . . .
We had a rare chance to talk to Jets secondary coach Dennard Wilson today. Position coaches aren’t made available a lot to the media, just once or twice a year. I asked Wilson about what Buster Skrine needs to do to become more consistent and cut down on penalties.
Wilson said that Skrine only had one bad penalty game. Skrine played 15 games, last year and was called for 13 penalties (11 accepted).
Wilson added, “[Skrine] was outstanding last year.”
Like I said to somebody before. I understand that coaches are going to protect players. They aren’t going to throw them under the bus, but I think praise should be tempered when talking about inconsistent players.
To say, Skrine, was “outstanding” is way over-the-top.
Skrine was involved in giving up three or four touchdowns (some blame him for four, but one is debatable) in Miami last year, heavily contributing to that last.
He’s a great guy, but his three years with the Jets have been a rollercoaster ride.
How about saying, he is “solid, and has some things to work on.”
“Outstanding.” C’mon.
When I tweeted this quote, some fans were shocked.
“Wilson needs to check his vision then,” tweeted Rich Miller.
“What???? He was terrible in some games,” tweeted C. Hunter 85.
“That is delusional,” tweeted Charles Domino
“Is this a joke?” Merl Teez asked
“This is why the Jets suck. There coaching staff is smoking crack!! Did he really say that??? Wowowow thank goodness I gave up my season tickets I had enough!! tweeted Glenn Zyke.
Skrine, who is an terrific person, was starting today along with Trumaine Johnson at cornerback. Morris Claiborne was out with a left hand injury, which he had in cast.
Skrine is the Jets nickel back, and first guy in as a starter if Johnson or Claiborne can’t go.
Todd Bowles, Mike Maccagnan, Wilson and company love the guy, and to a certain degree it’s unconditional love, and honestly it really doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks.
