You have people grasping at straws over what is wrong with the Jets offense the last two games.
In some quarters, you have people blaming the weapons and offensive line. i have heard this quite a bit.
Spare me.
The weapons are fine. Are they the best group in the league? No, but the group is fine. Did Jermaine Kearse and Robby Anderson forget out to play since last year?
As for the offensive line. Are they the best group in the league? No, but not as bad as some people lead you to believe. For the most part, they did a solid job in Cleveland. The run blocking against a very good front seven was awfully impressive, at times.
It’s not the weapons and it’s not the line.
It’s mainly that the Jets are starting a 21-year-old rookie quarterback who was just a two-year college starter.
By the way, I think he’s a heck of a prospect, and I applaud the Jets for trading up on the first round to get him. So don’t think for one second I’m dissing the kid. Not at all.
However, the last couple of weeks, you saw a 21-year-old rookie who started just two years in college.
As for the weapons, he’s not seeing the field that well, so it’s hard to bring out the best in your weapons when the QB is mainly focused on his first read.
As for the offensive line, in their defense, there are many plays where the young quarterback is holding the ball too long.
Once again, Darnold is a terrific prospect, but he’s playing like a raw rookie now, which is totally understandable, and that is probably the Jets’ biggest issue the last two weeks.
People need to stop sugar-coaching things.
It is what it is . . .
The Jets’ pass rush has to be foaming at the mouth to face the Jaguars backup left tackle, Josh Wells.
I know the Jets don’t have a dominating pass rusher, but when you have a backup left tackle, who is a big step down from the starter (Cam Robinson), you have to take advantage of it.
I asked one Jets pass rusher today for a scouting report on Wells, he went through a flowery answer, but at the end of the response said, “I think there are also some opportunity there.”
I asked the player about Wells skill set.
“He plays with a low pad level and has a nice kick set,” the player said. “I’m being complimentary for the sake of being complimentary. That’s about it.”
The guy actually admitted he was “being complimentary for the sake of being complimentary.”
Doesn’t that tell you all you need to know? . . .
Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers was asked today about Jamal Adams comments on WFAN that the team wasn’t prepared for Baker Mayfield. Rodgers didn’t really want to talk about it with his focus now on Jacksonville, but he did have one comment on the topic.
“With all due respect, (the Browns) didn’t change any plays when [Mayfield] came in,” Rodgers said.
Perhaps, but Taylor and Mayfield play the game so differently, that even if there calling the same plays, you need to adjust the defense to deal with their divergent skill sets . . .
