Indianapolis – Dan checks in from the Circle City with more Website Whispers from the combine. He has notes on prospects like Rahim Moore, Muhammed Wilkerson and several other possibilities for the Jets . . .
I blogged about USC safety Rahim Moore on Sunday.
This kid is so impressive.
He’s one of those guys that totally gets it, at a young age.
He reached out to Ed Reed several times over the last year for advice, and is constantly picking his brain.
Another one of his mentors is former UCLA safety, and ex-Pittsburgh Steelers star, Carnell Lake.
Moore studies more film than Michael Medved.
He eats very healthy – doesn’t eat candy or drink soda. He is also a workout warrior.
On top of all that, he’s a heck of a football player who had 10 picks during the 2009 season.
While the Jets do have a lot of safeties, they don’t have a star, and remember Ed Reed was such a huge part of what Rex did in Baltimore.
If he slips to 30, don’t be shocked if the Jets jump on him . . .
I’ve mentioned Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan quite a bit in Jets Confidential.
And while it’s unlikely he will slip to 30, it is possible if he doesn’t run well at the combine.
But, he might not be a great fit for 3-4 outside linebacker because a lot of scouts see stiffness in his hips, and question whether he can drop into coverage.
However, even if his 40 isn’t great and his hips are a little stiff, it’s hard to imagine the Jets passing on a pass rusher of this magnitude considering what a big need they have . . .
Another possibility at 30 is DE Muhammed Wilkerson out of Temple and Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Wilkerson along with Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt and Ohio State’s Cameron Heyward are considered the top 3-4 end prospects in the draft.
Watt will be long gone with the Jets pick. Watt is shooting up the charts. He’s 6-5, 295 with little fat, a chiseled frame, and a motor than never stops.
However, it is possible Wilkerson will be there, and possibly Heyward.
Wilkerson is a wonderful kid who used sports to stay out of trouble on the mean streets of Elizabeth.
At first, he wanted to play basketball, so he didn’t get a lot of football offers.
But late in the recruiting process, he wasn’t getting a lot of Division 1 basketball offers, so he decided to go the football route, and Temple was in the right place at the right time, and landed the type of prospect they rarely get.
Wilkerson would be a great fit for the Jets . . .
Oregon State nose tackle Stephen Pea was mad at himself after breaking the combine record by bench pressing 225, 49 times.
“My goal was 50 – I disappointed myself,” the Tongan Terror said.
A lot of guys that dominate the 225 drill, don’t pan out on the next level because the strength doesn’t translate to the field. Pea’s strength does. He’s great a bull-rushing . . .
Auburn DE Nick Fairley impressed everyone at the combine with how he conducted himself. He’s one of those “yes-sir, no-sir” kind of guys who practically breaks you hand when he shakes it . . .
A sleeper for the Jets at 30 is North Carolina pass rusher Bruce Carter. He’s coming off an ACL, so he’s going to slip, but he’s a terrific prospect.
