Cortland – It’s time for a heaping helping of Website Whispers from SUNY-Cortland. Here are some nuggets from arrival day for the Jets’ veterans . . .
Darrelle Revis arrived in Cortland, and continues to talk about his current contract being a “band-aid.”
Some reporters asked questions with a reference to it being a “band-aid.”
I’m still not aware of any quote, where anybody from the Jets called the deal Revis, signed in the summer of 2010, a “band-aid.”
I searched and searched for it, and also asked other reporters if they were aware of it, and they can’t find it either.
But the bottom line is Revis is here, and ready to go to work.
Though some observers wonder if he’s going to pull out another trick from the Schwartz-Feinsod handbook – end up on the stationary bike with an “injury.”
They used this tactic in the past, with Revis, Pete Kendall and Chris Baker . . .
The Jeff Otah mystery continues. Rex Ryan said today he can’t talk about what is going on physically with the newest Jet.
Why?
Until Otah passes his physical, he’s not officially a Jet. So while he’s in Cortland with the team, he’s really not a Jet yet.
So what is going on here?
This can’t just be an issue with his knees.
Think about it. If Otah has a knee issue that led to a failed physical, do you really think it’s going to heal in a week? Remember, he has to pass his Jets physical in a week, or the trade I called off.
So clearly, this is about him not passing the conditioning test.
Or the Jets are evaluating his knees over the next week, and deciding whether it’s a workable situation . . .
There was a published report that Tim Tebow might return kicks. Mike Westhoff laughed when talking about that published report.
“He’s not running back kicks, like I read (somewhere),” Westhoff said chuckling.
But the plans for him to be a personnel protector on the punt team are still on.
“Opponents will be staying up all night trying to figure out what we are going to do with him,” said Westhoff about what Tebow can do on special teams and offense.
Westoff was walking without a cane. He reinjured his problematic leg, while visiting his son in Indy a couple of weeks ago, and doctors had to put a new titanium rod.
The incision to the put the new rod in, went from his knee to his hip . . .
Nick Mangold said a big goal this off-season was to improve his pass protection, and his combination blocks that involve other linemen.
Matt Slauson walked into the dorm with nothing on his surgical shoulder – no tape, harnass, nothing. That has to be a good sign . . .
Will Leitch from Deadspin was among the numerous reporters at Jets camp today to cover the players’ arrival . . .
Kenrick Ellis read a number of impressive books while in jail.
With so many young people obsessed with video games, smart phones, texting and music, reading has become a lost art with so many of his generation.
But remember, Kenrick is originally from Jamaica, and moved to the states when he was 11.
They still use the British education system, like so many of the islands.
So while he’s been in some trouble, this guy is no dummy . . .
One of the most important quotes of the first day was from Rex Ryan, when asked about Santonio Holmes’ comments saying a two-quarterback system won’t work.
“We brought in Santonio Holmes in to be a wide receiver, not the offensive coordinator,” Ryan said.
This is big.
Clearly Ryan is done coddling Holmes.
And that is a smart move.
Holmes needs to be treated like everyone else, or Rex risks hurts his credibility with some of the players in the locker room. Players hate double standards.
