Florham Park – There is a lot to talk about coming out of the Atlantic Health Training Center, so let’s get right into it . . .
During the Jets-Jaguars broadcast. CBS analyst Solomon Wilcots said, “You talk to Mark’s teammates, they all seem to believe in him.”
With all due respect, what do you expect them to say during CBS production meetings? . . .
It’s like Jordan White doesn’t even exist.
Rex was asked today about receiver possibilities against Tennessee if Stephen Hill (LCL sprain) can’t go.
“Obviously, we’ve added Clyde Gates. We (have) added Mardy Gilyard. I think our pro (scouting department) department does a tremendous job of finding guys for us. Hopefully, that won’t be the case with Stephen. Hopefully he’ll be able to bounce back. We hope to get Clyde Gates back. Again, he was a guy that was really coming on for us. Obviously, you have Chaz (Schilens) and Jeremy (Kerley). Hopefully, Stephen won’t have that big of an injury.”
Why is White on the roster?
You have an injury at receiver, and you have a guy on the roster that had 140 catches last year in college, and you talk about what a great job you pro scouting department does finding new players?
Why do you need to go find a guy if Hill can’t go? If you don’t think White can fill in for a game or two, after you have been developing him since April, then get rid of him.
Watching White in training camp, I see a poor man’s Wayne Chrebet – a good route-runner with Velcro hands.
For the Jets to have him on the roster, and for Rex to not even mention his name as a guy who can help fill the void for Hill, for probably a game, that is ridiculous.
When I pressed Rex on this, he said that White is a slot receiver, and isn’t going to play ahead of Jeremy Kerley.
I’m not stupid. I think Kerley is a solid player. I never said he would replace Kerley. That is foolish.
But you are telling me a smart kid like White can’t play any other receiver position? I can assure you he didn’t catch 140 balls at Western Michigan last year all out of the slot.
I mentioned this in the latest issue of Jets Confidential Magazine (on sale now), the way Mike Tannenbaum and company have handled developmental receivers on the practice squad and end of the roster in recent years makes little sense.
It’s like a bus station, just ask Eron Riley, or any of the other myriad guys who have been in-and-out of there.
The grass is always greener with Mike.
By the way, I’m sure you already know, Eddie McGee is already gone, after three weeks, cut today from the practice squad.
But getting back to White, for Rex to treat him like an afterthought, when he’s on the roster, and the team might need a temporary fill-in, makes very little sense . . .
Darrelle Revis stopped by the locker room today and had a medical sleeve on his surgical leg. He didn’t seem to be walking with a limp . . .
Mo Wilkerson, coming off another excellent game, addressed the media today in Florham Park, and he said something, that along with talent, is a big reason for his success.
“I love the game of football,” Wilkerson said.
This might sound like a nothing statement, but to me it’s huge.
A lot of big guys in football really don’t love it. Many are funneled into the game because of their size, and put up with it.
This guy loves it, and it shows.
He plays with a lot of fire, enthusiasm and passion.
What a great pick by the Jets last year.
He looks like an emerging star, a difference-maker, and you win in this league with difference-makers . .
To say Nick Mangold (pictured above) was tremendous against the Jacksonville Jaguars, might be an understatement. He was absolutely dominant.
