New Jersey – It’s time for another helping of Dan’s Website Whispers. We have a few different items for you today. Let’s get underway.
Sometimes you have to look at commentary a little closer and realize what is behind the vitriol.
“Former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said on @NFLNetwork that he’d take Russell Wilson over Andrew Luck, RG3 and Colin Kaepernick? I laughed. Hard,” tweeted Manish Mehta.
Mehta is pulling no punches with Tannenbaum these days.
From what we hear, the writer feels Tannenbaum wasn’t very helpful to him when he was the GM. So I guess now is payback time.
And by the way, Tannenbaum’s comment about Wilson wasn’t that preposterous. Forget about his size for a second, you can make a strong argument that Wilson had a better year than those other three quarterbacks.
Who expected Seattle to do a darn thing this year, and they almost went to the NFC Championship Game with a rookie third round quarterback . . .
Some people have been poking fun at Tannenbaum for trying to start a broadcasting career, since he was never great with the media.
But you know what, neither were Warren Sapp or Dan Marino. You could make a long list of people who weren’t good with the press, who have gone on to careers in the media.
I’m not going to sit here and say Mike’s going to be a good at broadcasting – that remains to be seen, but let’s not act like the bar is so high in sports broadcasting these days. There are a lot of hacks out there – whether it’s sports talk radio or television.
I’m not calling Mike a hack as a broadcaster – we don’t know that yet. But the bar is so low right now, I’m not going to sit here are act like Mike can’t do this.
And you have to give him credit for not sitting around after his firing and moping. He’s trying to get back on the horse immediately.
I actually think he could be an attribute to the NFL Network or ESPN giving insight on contracts, the cap, trades, things of that nature.
Why not?
Jeez, let’s not act like we have a bunch of Jim McKay’s or Howard Cosell’s running around in this industry right now . . .
If the Jets trade Darrelle Revis, they probably should think long and hard about picking another corner in the first round.
Kyle Wilson is best suited to be a nickel or dime.
Alabama’s Dee Milliner, at this early stage, has emerged as the top corner in the draft.
Perhaps this could change based on how he runs at the combine.
While the 40 isn’t everything – when it comes to first round corners – it does matter.
If I guy runs a 4.6 forty, it’s probably going to push him down a lot of draft boards. It’s hard to play top-shelf man-to-man coverage as a 4.6 guy.
So what does Milliner bring to the table?
“He displays the length, fluidity, cover skills and tackling prowess in a #1 CB,” said Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly. “He looks the part with desirable size. He has great cover instincts. He is smart, disciplined and scheme versatile.”
So all that sounds good, but we will see how he runs, and Nawrocki has his doubts on this front.
“Milliner lacks elite speed,” Nawrocki said.
