While I don’t fire coaches
I do need to write about this because it’s on the forefront of many fan’s minds.
People wonder if the Jets fired Adam Gase in season, who could they promote to interim head coach?
You would have to say, the way the team’s defense is playing, Gregg Williams is not an option. Their defense has been as bad as their offense. They give up so many “free plays.” They are playing zone pass defense on a very low level every week.
I have an out of the box thought here that I think could make sense –Â wide receiver coach Hines Ward as an interim coach.
What an alpha dog! What a winner! He commands the room! I heard one of the Pittsburgh Steelers players talking last week about what a physical rivalry the Steelers-Ravens have, and he talked about how Ward was such a big part of that during his playing days, laying people out with his blocking.
Ward could teach their young players a lot of great lessons over the last eight games. If the Jets keep going the way their going, it could impact the mindset of some of their young developmental players – it could lead to a cultural rot.
If they went with Ward, he would have other people calling the plays on offense, defense and special teams, and his focus would be leading the team.
I’m not saying he’s necessarily ready to be a head coach, but the guy is a winner, and an interim coach doesn’t need to be Bill Parcells . . .
I am not a doctor, so I don’t have any idea what this might mean, but at one point in the first half, there was a TV shot of Adam Gase holding a play-sheet, and his the hand that was holding the play-sheet, was shaking terribly.
Once again, I have no idea what this means, but I found it a little alarming to see . . .
The Jets should get linebacker Peanut Onwuasor this week, and they need to get him on the field. The pass coverage of their inside linebackers is a huge problem now, and Onwuasor is a good coverage linebacker. The Jets linebacker coverage today was really poor, especially related to TE Travis Kelce.
The best pass coverage play by a Jets inside linebacker this year was by Harvey Langi in Buffalo on a deep pass to Devin Singletary on the goal line. He hasn’t played since . . .
On the Jets’ post-game show, the talking heads were beating the drum on Sam Darnold not having good weapons or a good line, so it’s hard to judge him.
Here is the deal people.
Does he have the best weapons and line? No.
Is he reading defenses well and making quick decisions? No.
It is possible for both situations to be true? Absolutely.
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz has suspect weapons and a suspect line, and is still moving his team.
If Trevor Lawrence is available, and the Jets have the first pick, they probably can’t let the argument that Darnold needs a better line and weapons get in the way of making the selection.
That play at the end of the first half against Buffalo last week, where Darnold threw into triple-coverage to Jeff Smith, and was picked off by Dane Jackson, playing in his first NFL game, was illustrative of a problem, not related to the line and weapons.
