Another blockbuster Aaron Rodgers story on Thursday, just when we thought that Jets era was in the rearview mirror.
He blasted Aaron Glenn on ESPN for the meeting in February, where the Jets coach told the QB they were moving on.
If Rodgers was going to do this, why not do it in February when Jay Glazer announced the Jets were moving on? Not complaining, but it’s tedious to have to revisit this now, but here goes:
“The confusing thing to me is I went out there, I meet with the coach (Aaron Glenn), we start talking. He runs out of the room. I’m like, that’s kind of strange,” Rodgers said. “Then, he comes back with the GM, and I’m like ‘Alright.’ So we sit down in the office. And I think we’re going to have this long conversation. I flew across country. And 20 seconds in, he (Glenn) goes. . . Literally, I’m talking to the GM about something, he leans to the edge of the seat, ‘You sure you wanna play football?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ He says ‘We’re going in another direction at quarterback.’
“I was kind of shocked. I mean, not shocked because I thought it was a possibility, listen, they wanna move on, that’s totally fine, but shocked because I just flew across country, he could’ve told me this through the phone.”
Some would argue this meeting should have been more of a feeling-out process, with both sides chopping it up, seeing where each stands, and then going from there.
But perhaps some would give Glenn credit for not being a phony and pretending he had some interest in retaining the QB, when he didn’t. Keyshawn Johnson let us know right out of the gate.
Right after Glenn was hired, Keyshawn told us on FS1 that the QB was a goner.
“He will not start off his career — now I said this first, nobody else is saying this — he will not start off his career with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback in September,” Johnson said, “I’m saying this with a lot of confidence. … I’m just letting you know, he ain’t going to start his career with that mess. It’s not going to happen. He’s not going to allow somebody to tell him what he’s doing as a coach.”
So this race was over right out of the starting gate.
Another factor that made Rodgers a goner was Woody Johnson not getting an ambassadorship.
If Christopher Johnson had taken over as owner, like he did when Woody got an ambassadorship in 2017, and like many expected him to do in 2025, there is a good chance Rodgers is still with the Jets.
He loves Christopher Johnson, and has told people he will be friends with Christopher for the rest of their lives.
Rodgers and Woody don’t see eye-to-eye on certain things.
A strange part of the story was Rodgers claiming – the Jets just wanted to know how he wanted to handle “the messaging” around his release.
“I don’t give a s–-t about the messaging. Why?” Rodgers said.
This seems like an odd thing to come from Glenn, if he was involved in this messaging stuff.
Why would a Bill Parcells disciple care about the “messaging” of a player release? Parcells would never have given a rat’s ass about messaging?
The first chance to get the Jets’ side of this story is when the team’s brass addresses the media in a pre-draft press conference next week, but don’t expect them to address it, especially Glenn.
Glenn will shut it down fast, say he’s not talking about it, and modern-day reporters will likely obey.
