Florham Park, New Jersey – Time for a truckload of Jets Whispers from Jets training camp in New Jersey . . .
Jets outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins said today that he’s up to 260 pounds.
Look, I understand that you need some beef to play strong-side outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, but watching him in coverage, I think he’s too heavy.
He’s really lumbering running with running backs and tight ends in coverage.
I just don’t understand why the Jets would want a guy who ran a 4.9 when he came out of Georgia to play this heavy.
Watching him run in the open field at 260, I think he might be slower now.
I don’t get it. Why bulk up a speed-challenged linebacker and make him slower? . . .
Robby Anderson had a great practice today – catching a ton of passes.
He does this in most practices.
And while this is impressive and good for the Jets, there is a downside to this.
If he’s catching a ton of passes in Jets practice, he’s catching them on Jets defensive backs.
While Anderson has looked really good, the coverage on him has often left a lot to be desired.
Buster Skrine is having a very poor training camp. Perhaps his contract is the reason he’s playing with the starters because it’s not based on merit. Great guy, but he’s having a very rough summer.
Justin Burris can’t run with Anderson. It’s a terrible match-up for Burris, who simply doesn’t have the wheels to keep up with Anderson. Burris should be a safety – he doesn’t have great speed, and his hips are somewhat stiff. Average speed and stiff hip are a bad combo for an NFL cornerback.
These two players have been culpable on many of Anderson’s catches.
Bowles seems to have a blind spot when it comes to Skrine and Burris, and coaches with personnel blind spots don’t last very long in this league, i.e. Rex Ryan . . .
While Demario Davis is never going to be a superstar in pass coverage, he’s absolutely improved from his last stint with the Jets.
In a one-on-one drill with linebackers covering backs and tight ends, all four throws on him were unsuccessful. This was an impressive display by Davis . . .
Dexter McDougle had another good practice. He could turn out to be the X-Factor for the Jets at the cornerback position . . .
Jets third-round pick, wide receiver Ardarius Stewart, has had an underwhelming camp so far. He had a bad drop today in a pitch-and-catch drill with quarterbacks and no defense on a quick slant.
Not saying he won’t be good, just giving you an update on how he’s looked.
Speaking of rookie receivers, Jets 2017 fourth-round pick Chad Hanson had perhaps his best catch of the summer on a deep crossing route from Christian Hackenberg. He beat Burris on the play.
Hanson has had an inconsistent camp. He’s still wearing a full leg sleeve for the knee he hurt in mini-camp, so he might not be healthy . . .
Wide receiver Charone Peake is quietly having a very good camp. He caught a deep cross today from Josh McCown for a nice gain, He caught the ball on Skrine.
Peake is a big, fast, tough receiver who is much better than a seventh-round talent (where he was picked).
