Cortland – The Jets were off today, but that doesn’t stop the Website Whispers Express from Central New York. Don’t miss out, sign up now . . .
The Jets held Braylon Edwards out of practice on both Sunday and Monday.
We know that he’s going to be on a pitch count in training camp and the regular season, so he will get occasional practices off.
But two in a row?
Kellen Winslow, who is also on a pitch count, was held out two days ago, but was back yesterday.
You have to wonder if Braylon was out due to that hit from Kyle Wilson on Sunday on a pass over the middle. He got rocked – it was a big-time hit.
I will look into this on Wednesday.
Considering Braylon said at the beginning of camp there is nothing wrong with him, and the delay in signing him this off-season wasn’t injury related, two days off in a row seems strange . . .
From what I hear, punter Ryan Quigley isn’t just a camp leg. His battle with incumbent punter Robert Malone is legitimate.
I hear the Jets really like Quigley.
Competition is always a good thing.
On the final play of Monday’s practice, Malone had an awesome punt – great hang-time, and it was downed on the one-yard line by Isaiah Trufant . . .
Sometimes D’Brickashaw Ferguson doesn’t get the credit he deserves for being a really good left tackle, because he goes about his job quietly.
This off-season, the Jets signed OLB Antwan Barnes (San Diego Chargers) to boost their pass rush. Barnes had 11 sacks in 2011. He’s very quick off the edge.
In a one-on-one pass rush drill, where it’s one offensive lineman, against one defender, Ferguson stone-walled Barnes on two straight plays, showing picture perfect technique.
Ferguson has everything you want in an NFL left tackle – quick feet, long-arms and excellent technique . . .
A young pass rusher who is having a pretty good training camp is Northern Illinois Sean Progar-Jackson. At NIU had had 24 sacks and 39.5 tackles for loss.
He’s a thickly-built, explosive athlete, and has been making a lot of plays.
He could be a good practice squad candidate . . .
While Calvin Pace is back, you have to wonder if he is going to start.
He could be more of a situational player.
I think thee Jets would ideally want their starting OLB combination to be Barnes and Ricky Sapp, who seem to better pass rushers than Pace.
Pace is a solid all-around linebacker – can stop the run, drop into coverage and provide a little pass rush, but he’s not a dynamic pass rusher.
The Jets seem to think Barnes and Sapp can provide more of a burst coming off the edges . . .
With Mike Goodson not here, and Chris Ivory rehabbing a hamstring injury, running back John Griffin (UMass) is getting a lot of reps and taking advantage of them.
Griffin is a very quick back who does a really nice job of making the first defender miss.
The coaches are really taking a liking to him . .
The Jets were off today, and I was driving around and came across a Llama farm (pictured above) . . .
