There are a lot of rumors that the Jets might be able to trade back from the 10th pick to acquire extra picks.
Since so many teams are hungry for quarterbacks, and we could easily see five go in the first round, there could be a team looking to trade up, and the Jets could potentially trade back and get extra picks, and perhaps not just move back in the first round, but get back into the second round. They have no second-round pick due to the Aaron Rodgers trade last year.
So many teams are desperate, and as one long-time NFL player and current broadcaster Mark Schlereth recently said, “Desperation leads to bad evaluations.”
You hear that North Carolina QB Drake Maye is going to go in the top 10.
Kurt Warner recently said, “He misses too many layups.”
In other words, easy throws.
Here is more on that from QB analyst J.T. O’Sullivan, who runs a YouTube channel called “QB School.”
“You can’t have that many misses like that,” said O’Sullivan, who played close to a decade in the NFL, NFL Europe and the CFL. “You don’t see guys in the league skip hitches. You don’t see many guys in the league skip outs. It is raining? Not it’s sunny.”
O’Sullivan added: “When you think of him in the top two-three of these quarterbacks. If he’s such a good quarterback, why doesn’t he throw good all the time? Because there are splash plays where you are like ‘damn, we are balling,’ then there are throws like, ‘What the hell homie.’ There are just so many bizarre misses. There really are.
“That was an RPO hitch, and you just threw it at the guys ankle and it’s dry and September and not cold. It wasn’t like if that was a big-time #1 receiver he would have scored. You just threw a hitch to the slot in the ground and then the next series you did it again.”
And Maye is going to go high.
Now, it’s unlikely that Maye slips to 10, and the Jets can trade out of 10 to a team that wants him. He’s probably going in the top five.
But maybe J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix entices some team to move up.
Watching all these quarterback prospects being talked about in the first round, I’m not sure if any of them are going to be the answer.
But remember, when it comes to picking quarterbacks in the first round, owners often get very involved.
They might not get as involved with scouting three-technique defensive tackles, but man do they like to meddle at the QB position.
Last year when Carolina traded with the Chicago Bears to get the first overall pick in the draft to grab a QB, Panthers owner David Tepper, and his wife, went to the private workouts for the QB prospects.
And reportedly, it was David Tepper who decided to pick Bryce Young, who is 5’10½. Reportedly the team’s former head coach liked another prospect better.
So the Jets could benefit at 10 from an owner falling in love with a QB and wanting to trade up.
Now, a team trading up with the Jets to move to 10 could be for another position, but don’t be surprised if the Jets trade back to get extra picks.
