In Part II of his three-part game review, Dan offers a myriad of notes and thoughts on the Jets-Giants preseason game . . .
CB Aaron Ross did a very nice job covering Plaxico Burress . . .
It’s pretty impressive how quickly defensive tackle Matt Kroul is picking up the offensive guard position.
He had several nice blocks last night, including one on Bilal Powell’s touchdown run. Matthew Mulligan, who had a very good game, had the other key block on this TD run.
Greg McElroy and Mulligan connected on a couple of bootleg passes on the right side, for 11 and 14 yards.
Mulligan also caught a pass from Jeremy Kerley on an option play. Kerley faked left, and then rolled to the right and hit Mulligan . . .
There is no question that Kerley can be a threat as a wildcat quarterback, but like we have stated here before, his size has to be a concern. Would you want a 5-9, 185-pound player running wildcat plays between the tackles?
In the fourth quarter, Kerley had a short option run between the tackles and he was nailed by three defenders, and twisted like a pretzel in the pile.
There is no questioning Kerley’s talent in this role, but the Jets need to be careful. This guy would be small to play option quarterback in college, let alone the NFL . . .
Wayne Hunter didn’t have a particularly good game. He had issues with Justin Tuck, who obviously is a premier end.
Tuck got by Hunter, and forced Sanchez to scramble (for three yards), late in the first quarter. In the middle of the second quarter, Tuck shed a block by Hunter, and stopped Shonn Greene on the line. Hunter was also called for unsportsmanlike conduct for a third quarter tiff with LB Michael Boley . . .
There are two sides to being a small, mobile lineman, and you saw that with backup center Robby Felix.
He threw a nice block on a screen pass on the right side to Joe McKnight that gained eight yards. He showed his mobility getting out to the right flate. But late in the game, massive nose tackle Gabe Watson was too much for Felix and got by him to stop McKnight for a loss . . .
Speaking of players who are a little undersized, NT Martin Tevaseu, had a really hard time against guard David Diehl. MTV had issues getting off blocks . . .
I saw John Connor limping around the locker room pretty bad. He suffered an ankle sprain against the Giants and is currently in a walking boot . . .
Aaron Maybin seems to be a one-trick pony. He is very quick, and he tries to use that quickness to beat tackles off the edge on almost every play. That is very hard to do in the NFL. Most of the tackles are too good. Maybin needs to add more moves to his bag of tricks . . .
Mark Sanchez and Rex Ryan are quick to point out that they don’t gameplan for preseason games. This is kind of a talking point for why the first-string offense struggled against the Giants.
Buffalo’s Ryan Fitzpatrick completed his first 10 passes in the Bills-Jacksonville game last weekend.
St. Louis QB Sam Bradford was 8-8 for 76 yards on his first drive against Kansas City.
It’s true that teams don’t gameplan, but the Sanchez still needs to play better.
