With no legitimate deep threat at wide receiver with the release of David Clowney and suspension of Santonio Holmes, the Jets best deep threat might actually be at tight end, and I’m not talking about Dustin Keller (who has pretty good speed himself). This Jeff Cumberland is something else. He is 6-4, 250 and legitimately runs in the 4.4 area. Remember when Mark Sanchez threw deep down the left seam to him against the Washington Redskins? Don’t be shocked if the Jets go deep to this guy on occasion. I’m not putting him in Canton, but wow, what an undrafted free agent from a raw talent standpoint . . .
The Jets practice squad is a pretty impressive group on paper. I want to focus on the two latest additions – DE Jarron Gilbert and OLB Cody Brown. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this – two second round picks, cut after one year, landing on the same practice squad. This is very rare. Gilbert has a lot of work to do. He’s way too skinny right now, but with added size and strength, the Jets could have something here. Brown has the potential to be a very good pass rushing OLB. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him yet because I think he just got there today. I’d really like to know what happened in Arizona. But on paper he’s an exciting prospect – 6-3, 255 with 4.7 speed. He had 18 sacks in his last two years at UConn . . .
The Jets gave up on Ricky Foley pretty quick. Remember when Rex said that Marques Murrell wasn’t big enough to be a starting OLB in a 3-4. Murrell had a somewhat thin frame. Foley has a similar frame to Murrell. When I looked at Foley from behind, I thought he was a safety . . .
If Pool can’t play, Eric Smith would start at safety. While no formal announcement was made, it’s pretty obvious, being around the team, that Matt Slauson will be the starting left guard to start the season . . .
