Cortland – Some topics I get into today – Brodney Pool – Kerry Rhodes . . . How is Vlad Ducasse progressing? . . . Braylon Edwards . . . Wayne Hunter . . . T.J. Conley and more . . .
Let me say this for the 100th time, Kerry Rhodes had a bad season last year, but these people putting Brodney Pool in Canton need to slow down a little bit.
After the morning practice, Rex Ryan said about Pool, “He’s a physical presence. He’s got great range. Albeit he let a ball go through his hands for a touchdown today, but other than that, the kid is tremendous. He studies. He stands right by Jimmy Leonhard. He’s hungry and wants to be part of this defense and we’re excited about him.
“He’s liable to come out and separate you from the ball. That’s always a good thing. Kerry Rhodes has that ability has well. For whatever reason, it’s never clicked as fast as it is for Pool.”
I have a few issues with this.
First of all, in the same practice, Pool was charged with pass interference. If a safety gave up a touchdown and was flagged for interference in the same practice, should the coach be offering such effusive praise?
As for him picking things up quickly, let’s see what happens in the games.
Can you imagine if Kerry Rhodes had a practice like that (if he wasn’t traded)? He would have been crushed by the media and coaches.
This constant trashing of Rhodes and praising of Pool is getting old.
Pool has a lot of ability, but let’s not put him in Canton just yet, and let’s see if he can stay healthy.
And let’s also not forget Rhodes had a pretty good run as a Jet, sans a few missed tackles last year.
In all fairness, let’s not totally destroy his New York legacy . . .
The Jets couldn’t have been thrilled that Braylon Edwards reported to camp overweight. He does look a little sluggish out there and has had a pretty quite camp so far.
In the morning practice today, he and Sanchez weren’t on the same page on a quick slant. These two clearly still have a lot of work to do to get in sync . . .
While Vlad Ducasse has more of an upside, you get the sense that Matt Slauson will probably be the opening day starter at left guard.
Slauson is more game ready. Ducasse still has a long way to go in learning the playbook.
By the way, from what I hear, Slauson graded out very well last summer in the preseason . . .
There was a rare Marcus Henry sighting this morning. He caught two passes in short period of time. I can’t remember the last time he was thrown to. This guy has talent, but he’s a major longshot to make the roster. It just doesn’t seem he’s being given much of a chance to show what he can do . . .
Wayne Hunter was working on the jugs machine after practice to improve his hands for the occasional pass thrown his way as a tight end . . .
The Jets are really limiting LT’s reps, which is probably smart. Who knows how much he has left, so why leave some of it on the Cortland practice field . . .
T.J. Conley had a bad shank in the afternoon special team’s practice. Not to make a big deal about one punt, but you get the sense that Mike Westhoff will end up going with Steve Weatherford as his punter. Westy usually goes with the more experienced punter. He’s not big on young guys . . .
