Cincinnati -A lot to get into tonight from the Heartland, following the Jets 49-9 loss to the Bengals. Let’s get into it . . .
I’m not making an excuse for the Jets’ offense, which was horrid today, but the Bengals have a damn good defense.
Remember one thing about this Bengals defense – they held Tom Brady without a touchdown a few weeks ago, breaking his consecutive streak of 52 games with a touchdown . . .
Jeff Cumberland has a concussion.
It’s unclear if he will be able to play against the New Orleans Saints.
Wow, can you imagine if the Jets are sans Cumberland next week against the Saints?
He might be there top weapon.
Recently, Stephen Hill and Kyle Wilson played the week after a concussion.
And Cumberland didn’t seem that out of it after the game – watching him chat with people.
So maybe the Jets catch a break this week, and Cumberland is able to play . . .
Some in the media are going to go after the Jets for the Darrelle Revis’ trade in light of their cornerback play in Cincinnati.
But anybody that who claims that the Jets picked Dee Milliner to replace Revis is lying.
Milliner was picked to be the team’s #2 cornerback – Antonio Cromartie is replacing Revis.
And last time I checked, Revis’ team hasn’t won a game. What are the Buc’s getting for their $16 million this year?
One problem is that Cromartie is playing hurt (knee and hip), and that is impacting his speed. I’m not making excuses for him, just dealing with reality.
As for Milliner, it’s a dereliction of duty for the Jets to be starting him now.
Darren Walls should be starting until Milliner is truly ready. Walls is the better player right now.
The Jets’s should check their egos at the door, and stop trying to justify the pick, perhaps due to the Revis’ trade. Don’t worry about PR.
I think Milliner can be very good, but considering he missed the entire off-season program (labrum surgery), and then missed most of camp, first with a holdout, then an Achilles injury, why the heck is he starting? It’s unfair to his teammates, and unfair to the kid. He’s not ready. He’s behind the eight ball after missing so much time.
Let Milliner play a nickel or dime role until he’s truly ready.
Stop playing a game of pretend, making him into something he’s not right now . . .
The Jets pass rush wasn’t very good today. They had one sack.
The Bengals did a good job of focusing on the Jets’ talented interior defensive linemen with a lot of double teams, forcing the Jets to beat them off the edge, and the Jets lack of great edge pass rushers reared it’s ugly head.
Garrett McIntyre is a solid player, but not a scary pass rusher and Quinton Coples is out of position at outside linebacker, and is still not 100 percent recovered from that leg injury he suffered this summer. The Jets miss Antwan Barnes . . .
Willie Colon got really banged up in this game.
After the game, he had a big wrap around his midsection, like he had a rib injury, and a big wrap around his lower left leg.
The guy is a warrior. He was battling to the end. He is as tough as they come – Bronx tough . . .
One reason Geno Smith throws so many picks is the doesn’t make quick enough decisions, and often delivers the ball late.
The windows to throw into in college are much better, because there are a lot of bad defensive backs on that level.
So a rocket-armed quarterback like Smith can just fire the ball, even if he’s a little late, into those big windows.
But with the small windows in the NFL, and better secondy play, you can’t consistently deliver the ball late, and not get burned.
On the second Pick Six today, a deep out to David Nelson, the pass was way late, and his fellow Mountaineer Adam Jones made Smith pay . . .
You should have seen Greg McElroy on the sidelines for the Jets-Bengals game. He had a clipboard, and he was like an assistant coach for the Bengals. What a resource he was for the Cincinnati coaches with his great insight on Gang Green on both sides of the ball. He helped them a great deal.
