SUNY Cortland – A lot going on in Cortland, including major issues at nose tackle, a concussed player, a wrist injury and so much more. Let’s get rolling . . .
The Jets have significant issues at nose tackle right now.
Sione Pouha has back problems, and Kenrick Ellis plays too high and struggles getting off blocks . . .
Rex Ryan mentioned a concussed player who went to Manhattan to see a specialist, but didn’t say his name. The player is OLB Brett Roy.
He missed a couple of weeks, but is now back.
And you want to know something really scary. He practiced with it for a couple of days.
I’m not saying the Jets made him practice with a concussion. I don’t think they knew about it.
People think I complain too much about all these quick-trigger injury settlements for fringe players.
But this scenario is a big reason I have a problem with it.
These guys think they can’t miss any time because they are on the bubble, so sometimes they play with injuries they shouldn’t . . .
Jeff Cumberland had yet another prolific practice.
The Jets clearly have big plans for him this year.
But there is a double-edge sword to Cumberland’s success in practice.
It means he’s beating Jets defenders, often linebackers.
In the 11-on-11 portion of practice, he beat David Harris over the middle early on, and then later he got behind Harris and Bart Scott . . .
Ellis Lankster continues to shine. He had an impressive PD and a pick.
On a Bill Belichick team, he would be allowed to challenge Kyle Wilson for the nickel job, but not here.
Camp star Jordan White, beat Wilson on a deep out on the right side . . .
Antonio Cromartie caught a short crossing route today. He was wide open. Remember, he was wearing the same color as the defensive players (dark green), and this might have caused some confusion in coverage.
If Cromartie plays receiver in a preseason game, and gets hurt, if I owned the Jets, I would fire somebody.
He has an $8.2 million cap figure this year.
He’s incredibly valuable to the Jets as a corner.
This makes no sense.
Patrick Turner had a good practice today, as did Jordan White. Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley are close to returning, and Stephen Hill is a good deep threat. Eron Rily is also playing well.
This concept that they need him at WR is bogus.
Maybe once in a blue moon (like on a hail mary or reverse).
He doesn’t make personnel and coaching decisions, who cares if he wants to do it . . .
D’Anton Lynn has a brace on this left hand. It looks like a wrist or hand injury . . .
Josh Mauga had a nice PD on an out to Riley. Mauga has had a good camp. The DeMario Davis pick has certainly lit a fire under him . . .
Hill seems to be dealing with two issues – a right ring finger injury and a knee issue. He practiced, and looked okay, but he’s so physical going after passes, he’s taken a real beating this summer . . .
With Eric Smith out with a knee, and LaRon Landry sitting out (he’s on a pitch count), the starting safeties were Yeremiah Bell and Josh Bush.
Somebody watching practice wondered why Antonio Allen wasn’t starting ahead of Bush.
It’s because Allen is still a work-in-progress playing in space. He played mostly around the line at South Carolina. Bush, a former corner, is better in space.
