The Jets organization has an enormous challenge ahead of them. It’s not going to be easy. If you saw the Daily News today, you know what I’m talking about.
My friend Gary Myers is foaming at the mouth over this Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow “quarterback controversy” as he calls it.
If this was a boxing match, he’d be Don King. He is promoting this “competition” non-stop.
He loves writing quarterback competitions – loves them
And he writes for the paper with the highest circulation in the country, so he most definitely has an impact on the mindset of some fans – especially the strap-hangers and casual football fans.
He’d be the first to admit, he basically covers quarterbacks and head coaches.
How many times did he fire Tom Coughlin over the years? The Giants brass will never forget that.
What my friend wrote today about the Sanchez and Tebow, seemed a little over the line.
“The Daily News will provide pass-by-pass coverage of the Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow quarterback battle this summer in training camp in Cortland,” Myers wrote. “Our guy Manish Mehta will be charting every throw. That includes each of Tebow’s passes that create divots when they nosedive five yards in front of Dustin Keller and each pass Sanchez sails over the head of Santonio Holmes. This is going to be one of the most entertaining QB controversies of all time.”
My goodness Gary, that sentence in the middle, taking a shot at each quarterbacks’ accuracy, was pretty obnoxious.
One Jets beat writer was surprised at how obvious Myers was with his agenda in this note.
“Gary shouldn’t be so blatant about it,” said the beat writer.
“What a nasty, sourpuss Gary is,” another New York sports writer chimed in.
What has to concern the Jets is how quickly Gary, and some others, are attempting to stir this thing up. They are into a divide-and-conquer approach in OTA’s, which have very little import in the grand scheme of the NFL.
“There are a lot of divide-and-conquer stories going on and it’s only May,” said source close to the Jets. “That doesn’t bode well for August. But it all goes away, of course, if they win.”
I’m telling your right now, if the Jets don’t come up with a concrete plan to deal with Myers and the like, this Sanchez-Tebow deal could sink them.
Think about what happened last week. Darrelle Revis raved about Tebow as a leader, and the media took a quantum leap, and made it seem like the cornerback was taking a shot at Mark’s leadership ability.
The Jets have to start taking a tougher approach – right now!
Gary is treated royally by the Jets. They are constantly setting up special interviews for him outside of the norm. Rex is always granting him interviews after press conferences. Rex also gave him an hour of his time for a book project. They are also constantly hooking him up with passes for his friends and family.
And you know what – it doesn’t seem they are buying ANY slack by treating him nice.
Rex needs to calmly, cordially, the next time he sees him, tell him he didn’t appreciate that low brow stuff he wrote about his QBs’ accuracy.
If the Jets continue to sit back, and take the blows like a punching bag, and don’t fire back a little bit (calmly), this Tebow-Sanchez scenario could turn into a five-ring circus.
They can’t let Gary, and others, divide their locker room.
