East Rutherford – Here are some of my news, views and Whispers from the Jets win over the Giants in Week Three of the preseason . . .
Eric Decker returning punts made little sense.
And Todd Bowles explanation was a little strange. He basically said they didn’t have anyone else due to Jeremy Kerley being out with concussion.
I don’t get that explanation.
Javier Arenas and Walter Powell have punt returning experience.
And when the Jets finally pulled the plug on Decker after three attempts, including a muff, and one he let bounce past him, Powell came in and returned a punt for a touchdown.
Decker returning punts in the Jets-Giants preseason game reminds me a little of when Jason Sehorn returned punts in a Jets-Giants exhibition game and blew out a knee. Obviously Decker didn’t get hurt, but this wasn’t a great decision, and the Jets are lucky nothing happened to their #2 receiver, who had a touchdown catch in this game . . .
Backup center Wesley Johnson had a big wrap on his right ankle after the game . . .
I don’t want to read too much into this, but Mike Maccagnan didn’t look very happy when he left the Jets’ trainer’s room after the game.
Obviously the big injury coming out of this game was Leonard Williams knee.
Adam Schefter announced that the Jets feel it’s just a bone bruise.
The Jets feel they need to have him take an MRI on Sunday to find out what is going on.
Schefter will likely have an announcement on the MRI result tomorrow . . .
James Carpenter was definitely hurting after the game. He was in-and-out of the trainers rooms and was hobbling. It doesn’t seem serious, but there was something wrong . . .
Jets fullback Tommy Bohanon played some tailback in the fourth quarter.
The Jets are thin at tailback with the injury to Darryl Richardson (concussion) and Stevan Ridley (knee) on PUP.
Bohanon knew entering the game this was likely to happen late in the game.
He ran eight times for 27 yards.
Bohanon was a tailback in high school who carried like 30 times a game in a Wing-T . . .
The complexity of the Jets wide receiver cuts just got more complicated with DeVier Posey leading them in receiving tonight and Walt Powell returning a punt for a touchdown. And Saalim Hakim is great in kick coverage, as we saw again tonight. What do you do with Shaq Evans (pictured above)?
It’s not going to be easy. I’m started to think perhaps Jeremy Kerley isn’t a lock.
I don’t want this to come out the wrong way, but I don’t think they needed to pick Devin Smith, and I felt that way at the time.
I thought that Owusu and Graham could have filled the speed receiver role. Both have world class speed and played well when given the Jets this year.
But clearly the new regime didn’t think much of them when they entered the building, and picked Smith.
Don’t get the wrong idea. Smith’s a terrific prospect, but the position is overstocked, and they are going to have to cut some very good players.
