The Jets released Eric Decker today. The announcement was made by Adam Schefter. The Jets had hoped to trade him, but the leak last week, pretty much ended the chances of that.
Last week Tuesday Schefter announced that the Jets were looking to trade or release Decker. This was probably a leak from the agent.
So how on earth are you going to trade a guy when it got leaked out you are going to release him if you can’t trade him?
Why would you not just focus on the trade, and tell the agent you are focused on the trade, and do not bring up the possibility of a release at all?
Something wasn’t handled right here.
And it’s clear Schefter has it in for the Jets. And this is likely because they won’t play ball with him, leak him stuff.
That is how it works in the information industry.
If a GM or coach, who is giving him stuff, was looking to trade a player, there is a good chance Schefter doesn’t destroy their bargaining position. You think he does this to John Elway?
But until the Jets play ball with him, he’s probably going to make their lives miserable.
I don’t know if y’all remember this, but when the Jets signed Decker, Schefter was pissed at them for announcing this on their own website before he could.
He probably expected Decker’s agent Todd France to get it to him first.
John Idzik wouldn’t play ball with Schefter, and the team beat the Schefter to the punch.
And now Mike Maccagnan doesn’t seem to be playing ball with him either.
Remember when Schefter reported the Jets gave free agent linebacker Donta Hightower a cupcake for his birthday. This was clearly reported to humiliate the Jets.
Enough of that. Now let’s turn to the impact of the transaction.
I think the Jets will live to see another day.
First of all, he’s 30-year-old receiver coming off hip and shoulder surgeries. I’d be a little nervous having him on the roster in Week One, and then having to guarantee his $7.2 million salary for the season. Coming off not one, but two major surgeries. That would scare any team. Now, when he signs somewhere else, he will get a different contract. I don’t think any team would want to pay him $7.2 million this year. You will see when he signs elsewhere, it won’t be for that figure.
Robby Anderson looks like he’s picking up where he left off last year. He looks very good this spring. If he doesn’t have any legal issues that sideline him, he seems poised to have a very good year for the Jets in 2017. Quincy Enunwa should be solid again as the #2 or #3, and the Jets have two draft pick receivers they like.
Charone Peake also has talent.
But keep something else in mind. Austin Seferian-Jenkins has looked superb this spring. Based on what I’ve been seeing, I think this passing offense is going to be centered around him. So the Jets #1 receiver in 2017 could be their tight end.
