Florham Park – Should the Jets be worried about him?
Marcus Maye clearly isn’t healthy.
For the second day in a row, he was at practice with no helmet, which usually is a tell-tale sign that a player is either limited (to light drills) or being held out all-together.
You have to wonder if he will be available for Monday Night Football. Jets trainer John Mellody (pictured above) will likely make that call.
I can’t give you an official team position on his status because they won’t comment until later in the week when they have to issue an injury report, but clearly something is going on here.
You might recall a note I reported in the middle of training camp that after Maye returned to practice, he made a play on the ball and limped off the field. To me, it looked like he might have tweaked his surgical ankle.
We will see if he plays in Detroit, but if he doesn’t, the Jets can overcome it. The have two very good backups to Maye in Doug Middleton and Terrence Brooks. While Maye is a terrific prospect, he’s still a young, developing players, so I don’t think either player, necessarily, is a downgrade at this point . . .
I always hammer the Jets for playing draft pick politics. But I have to admit they improved in area in 2018, releasing several draft picks from Mr. Coffee’s first three drafts.
But as I’ve always point out, this political football goes on all round the league, aside from a few places like New England.
And the Jets just took advantage of the Giants pulling this nonsense.
You don’t need to be a Giants insider to realize that QB Davis Webb outplayed QB Kyle Lauletta in camp this summer.
But I was telling people the second they picked Lauletta, Webb was in trouble. Not because I’m Nostradaumus, but because I’ve been watching this egomaniacal personnel stuff go around the league for 25 years. New Giants GM Dave Gettleman picked Lauletta this year in the fourth round, but he inherited Webb who was picked in the third round last year by the old regime.
And voila, Gettleman keeps Lauletta and releases Webb. It was so predictable.
Mr. Coffee did a nice job claiming Webb on waivers. He gives the Jets a third QB in case of injury this year to one of the first two guys, and also a potential solid #2 for 2019. He has great size (6-5, 229), a good arm, and played very well this summer . . .
Today in Jets practice, they seemed to give punter Lachlan Edwards a day off. The punts to returner Andre Roberts were coming from a ball machine. But I forget to mention this yesterday, that Edwards struggled on Monday.
He has a world of potential, but continues to be inconsistent. I could see he was frustrated on Monday after a couple of his punts. You know when a tennis or player or golfer does air technique right after a bad shot, almost pointing out what they just did wrong? I saw him doing that after a couple of his punts, like he had something to work on.
It’s still a big mystery why the Jets brought in no competition for Edwards this summer, like they Ray Guy in the building. Odd.
