Can this cornerback help them? . . .
Rookie free agent cornerback Kyron Brown had a pick along with a PD in the red zone.
He has very good instincts and does a nice job jumping routes.
If he keeps doing what he’s doing in camp, don’t be shocked if he makes the team. They need one of their young cornerbacks to emerge, and perhaps it will be Brown.
One negative play for Brown was when Robby Anderson beat him down the right sideline, but Sam Darnold overthrew the receiver.
Darnold has a great arm, but still needs some work on his deep touch . . .
In a one-on-one WR-DB drills, Josh Bellamy beat Derrick Jones twice for long gains down the left sideline.
Jones is a tremendous athlete, and has flashed at times, but he needs to be more consistent . . .
LB Frankie Luvu made a couple of standout plays today in practice. He tipped a pass leading to an interception by CB Parry Nickerson.
He also beat an offensive tackle off the edge and stopped RB Eli McGuire for a loss.
Luvu has the athletic ability to drop in coverage and also the flexibility to dip under tackles, something some of the other Jets pass rushers don’t have.
Expect him to be a big part of their defensive plan this year . . .
Word out of Atlanta was that Brian Poole is a great blitzer, and he showed that today when he blitzed off the edge and tipped a pass from Sam Darnold to Chris Herndon causing an incompletion . . .
Not only is Jon Harrison going to lose his starting job to Ryan Kalil (there will be no competition – Kalil is the starting center), but he might not even make the team.
Today in practice, Tom Compton was the second-team center.
Harrison was the first-team center, but that was only because Kalil isn’t practicing yet.
So once Kalil takes over as the starting center, it’s possible the Jets will go with Compton as the backup swing player because he’s probably a better guard than Harrison.
So not only is Harrison out of a starting job, he might need to look for another NFL job soon.
Cut-throat league. Solid player. Maccagnan guy . . .
One of the values of Trevon Wesco is that he isn’t just a tight end, but can play fullback, which he has done at times around the goal line.
He had a nice lead block today on a Le’Veon Bell TD run up the middle.
On this Bell TD run by Bell, Brandon Shell pancaked Nathan Shepherd.
I feel a little bad for Shepherd. He’s a great guy, and works his tail off, but he’s got athletic stiffness that might be hard to overcome. He lacks quick twitch. Not his fault. Either you have it or not. Guys like Leonard and Quinnen Williams have it . . .
People have been wondering how Jachai Polite is doing. He’s been a little quiet, but today he beat rookie left tackle Chuma Edoga (pictured above) off the edge for a QB pressure in the red zone . . .
Robby Anderson beat Trumaine Johnson soundly on a crossing route for a nice gain. Shortly after this Johnson left practice with groin tightness.
This is a bad match-up for Johnson who runs in the 4.6-4.7 area against Anderson who runs between 4.3-4.4. You do the math.
Gregg Williams better be careful expecting Johnson to stay on an island against speed receivers one-on-one with no help. Risky proposition.
Johnson is a good football player. He has solid technique and ball skills, but at this stage of his career you can’t throw him out there against speed merchants with no help. It’s not going to work.
