Arkansas guard Brady Latham was one of the better Jets undrafted free agent signings in 2024.
He missed the whole spring with some leg issue, but has been full go in training camp.
It looks like the Jets have moved him to center, and watching him at his new position, he looks like he belongs.
It’s in his DNA. His father was a center at Oklahoma.
Keep an eye on this guy . . .
The Jets are being smart with veteran left tackle Tyron Smith, keeping him on a pitch count in practice. He didn’t practice today.
But that didn’t stop him from tutoring rookie left tackle Olu Fashanu.
After practice, Smith spent a lot of time with Fashanu working on technique . . .
Practice ended with Aaron Rodgers hitting tight end Tyler Conklin for a touchdown in the front of the end zone.
It looked like wide receiver Allen Lazard did a nice job with a legal pick on the play, helping Conklin get open.
Lazard continues to have a solid camp . . .
In the latest issue of Jets Confidential Magazine, Rodgers is on the cover with the caption – “A Beautiful Mind.”
We have a feature in support of this cover about his brilliance at the line of scrimmage reading defenses and calling audibles.
And you saw an example today, when he came to the line, read the defense, checked to a better play and hit wide receiver Malik Taylor for a touchdown . . .
Joe Tippmann had another high snap to Aaron Rodgers today. Still a work in progress in this area . . .
He’s probably not going to get a lot of carries with the Jets pretty deep at running back, but watching Tarik Cohen early in camp, I’m starting to think he should be more in the mix.
At 5-6, his low to the ground running style, makes it very hard for defenders to get their pad level low enough to wrap him up. He had a long run off left tackle today.
To use a scouting term, he runs with “a very low pad level,” which is a really good thing at the running back position . . .
You hear these players talk about Robert Saleh, and you get the sense they love him as a coach.
And it’s not just player-speak.
Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not saying he’s Bill Walsh or Vince Lombardi, just saying he’s a good motivator who connects with players and they like him.
As for him as a strategist, considering the team’s 18-33 record under his watch, it’s hard to give him a top-shelf grade there so far, but if Rodgers stays healthy this year, and plays like vintage Rodgers (which he often looked like OTAs and early in training camp), the perception of Saleh will change quickly.
Just look at Bill Belichick his three years without Tom Brady in New England. His football IQ seemed to go down.
The point is simple – if you have an elite QB, you are a lot smarter head coach (and GM) in the NFL.
There is no doubt Saleh has some improvement to make as a head coach, but it’s pretty amazing how much better these NFL coaches look when they have a franchise QB . . .
The Jets had some free-agent workouts after practice.
