Get used to it.
We are going to be hearing about this non-stop for the next few months.
Aaron Rodgers to the Jets because they now have Nathaniel Hackett as their OC.
Hackett was the Green Bay OC from 2019-21, and the two reportedly have a great relationship.
How close they are, I have no idea. Sometimes these things get embellished.
Remember, Hackett was replaced by Tom Clements, who Rodgers badly wanted back in the building.
So who knows?
I’m sure Rodgers likes Hackett, who seems like a very likeable fellow, but remember, Hackett didn’t ball the plays for Rodgers. He had the ttiel of OC, but the head coach called the plays.
But nonetheless, we are going to hear about the Rodgers-Jets stuff for the next few months, so buckle up.
Look, I’m not stupid, I have no issue with the Jets looking into Rodgers., Oc course you should, but I think it’s a long-shot.
First of all, the Packers would take a $40 million cap hit if they trade him, and do you really think they want to go with Jordan Love this year, in kind of must-win year for Matt LaFleur?
Also, Rodgers is scheduled to make $58 million this year, which would devastate the Jets cap.
And who knows if he would want to play in New York.
“He doesn’t seem like a New York kind of guy,” said one long-time NFL executive of the Chico, CA-native.
And Rodgers has a no-trade clause, so if there is a trade possibility., he kind of controls where he’s going to go.
The Jets are getting ripped by a lot of fans for the Hackett hire. There are two bad optics with this hire. First he’s coming off a brutal one-year in Denver as head coach, where he didn’t even finish the season before getting fired. Secondly, his father was a Jets OC was run out of town, so older Jets fans cringe when they hear that name.
But the Jets fans who like the move, almost, to a man and woman, say the same thing – “Good hire, if he can help them get Rodgers.”
Well, getting Rodgers is a long-shot, It’s possible, but definitely in the long-shot category. They should try to do it, but it could be very hard.
So if they don’t get Rodgers, does that make this bad hire?
Not necessarily.
Hackett is probably an upgrade over Mike LaFleur because he’s called plays before at several places. LaFleur never called plays before coming to the Jets.
Is Hackett Bill Walsh as a play-caller. no, but that 2018 season in Jacksonville he was really good, that season they went to he playoff with Blake Bortles. He did a really nice job mixing it up that year.
I can’t judge him on his stint in Green Bay from 2019-21 because while he had the title of OC, he didn’t call the plays – the head coach did.
He can certainly be a solid play-caller for the Jets. He knows how to call plays, and play offensive chess.
