Some would argue that Garrett Wilson drama is getting out of hand.
“I talk to people in Garrett Wilson’s circle,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said recently on his podcast. “They think, now I want to emphasize this is speculation on their part, they think he will ask for a trade after the season.”
Recently, the top Jets insider, SNY’s Connor Hughes, reported that Wilson has “issues with what’s happening under center.”
Wilson was caught on camera in the third quarter of the Jets’ win over Jacksonville, yelling at Jets receivers coach Shawn Jefferson after a stalled drive.
Look, it’s frustrating to see all the losses Wilson has endured during his three years with the Jets, especially coming from Ohio State, where he was used to a lot of winning.
But that’s life, man.
Even with the losing, you are still getting paid good money to play a kid’s sport. In 2022, Wilson signed a four-year deal for $20.6 million guaranteed, and another big contract is on the horizon.
Perspective.
Wilson is not a victim here like many fans and reporters will lead you to believe.
He’s blessed to the highest degree.
Losing sucks, but there is only one team happy at the end of each NFL season – the Super Bowl winner.
Could the Jets football operation have been run better during Wilson’s first three years with the team? Of course.
But man, there are a lot bigger problems in the world. Trying living in Yemen or Ukraine.
I like Garrett Wilson. He’s a nice guy, but it’s hard to feel sorry for him because the team has lost a lot and sometimes he’s not happy with the ball distribution.
And by the way, he has 90 catches this year and with two games left, will probably go over 100.
Brian Costello asked Aaron Rodgers on Tuesday: “Wilson’s caught 90 receptions though, he’s gotten the ball a pretty good amount, right?”
“Six a game on average, yeah,” Rodgers said.
Look, how they utilized him in their recent loss to the Los Angeles Rams was misguided, but please stop making him a victim.
And if this drama continues, the new regime might need to consider trading him if they are made an offer they can’t refuse. I’m not suggesting that right now, just saying if the drama continues, and reaches the Jamal Adams level.
Just like Buffalo reached a point where they traded superstar Stephon Diggs because they could not take the drama anymore.
I’m not comparing Wilson’s behavior to Diggs, who was guilty of much more egregious behavior in Buffalo, but at some point, the drama is not worth it.
Some might argue that Woody Johnson did not need to make the Davante Adams trade on October 15.
Wilson had established himself as the #1 receiver, but now he’s kind of 1A.
Early in the season, the combination of Wilson and Allen Lazard played off each other well, and there was a clear pecking order – Wilson was the #1 and Lazard was the #2.
It’s easier for a QB to go through progressions with a clear caste system. Having two star receivers, and two #1’s, sounds great on paper, but sometimes it can make it hard on a QBs progression. With two superstars needing the ball a lot, it can prey on the QB’s mind.
But nonetheless, Wilson’s problems are first-world problems. Wilson is still having a good year, and a sideline explosion on the sideline of a game the Jets offense actually played well in, at Jacksonville, was a bad optic.
I’m not looking to attack Wilson here. He’s a tremendous talent and seems like a terrific guy when you interact with him.
But he’s not a victim here.
And even though he hasn’t been dealt the best hand as far as wins and the way the prior regime ran the team, there are a lot bigger problems in the world.
I’m sorry, I can’t feel sorry for grown men getting paid millions to play a kid’s game.
Can’t do it.
