On March 30, Jets GM Darren Mougey announced that Justin Fields will be the Jets’ starting QB.
“We believe Justin is the starter,” Mougey said. “We believe we can win with Justin. We’re excited about Justin’s potential.”
Now, most people assumed that Fields would be the starter after the Jets gave him a two-year deal for $40 million with $30 million guaranteed, but considering he is 14-30 as an NFL starter, some might argue he should have to compete for the starting job, at least in the spring and summer.
Today, Mougey was asked why he named Fields the starter without any competition.
“Yeah, we feel really good about Justin as our starter moving forward and believe in Justin, and we can win with Justin, and he was a priority in free agency, and we’re glad we got him here,” Mougey said.
So since Fields was given the job with no competition, this led to a question to the GM about his philosophy overall about open competition.
“Yeah, I mean, you always want to have competition on your team at all positions, but we feel really strongly about Justin as our starter,” Mougey said.
