ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced the seven teams Jamal Adams would like to be traded to
. . . Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco or Seattle.
It’s interesting that the player not only requested a trade with two years left on his contract, but now thinks that he can dictate where he goes.
Welcome to “The Anthony Davis Era,” where players not only ask out before their contracts are up, but dictate their next location.
Theoretically, if the Jets trade him, they could send him to Cincinnati if they wanted to.
Wide receiver Stefon Diggs wanted out of Minnesota, so the Vikings obliged, and they sent him to Buffalo, clearly not at the top of his list. You could tell by the radio silence on Diggs Twitter account after the trade, that probably wasn’t the team he had in mind.
But if the Jets cave to Adams demands, a teams that makes a ton of sense for an Adams trade is Seattle, for a few reasons.
Pete Carroll is a 68-year-old head coach is wants to win now, and has no problem trading quality draft picks and players in trades to get players he thinks he can push him over the top.
Remember on September 1, 2017, he sent a second-round pick, along with WR Jermaine Kearse, to the Jets, for Sheldon Richardson.
Then, August 31, 2019, he traded a third-round pick, along with a couple of players, to the Texans for Jadeveon Clowney.
So Carroll isn’t adverse to making big summer trades to acquire players he thinks can help deliver a Super Bowl to his team that season. Unlike some other coaches, he’s not concerned with getting rid of future draft capital to push his team over the top in a given season. While there is a GM in Seattle, Carroll has final say on personnel.
Also, Carroll loves having dynamic safeties, like during the “Legion of Boom” days with Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. They haven’t been nearly as good at safety since the departure of those two players. They need a game-changing safety to help a defense that was pretty bad last year, finishing 26th in the league.
The Seahawks run defense was disappointing last year, and Adams is an enforcer against the run.
Another factor that makes Seattle a possible location for Adams is Carroll will embrace the player’s activism.
Adams has become very involved in the police reform movement since the death of George Floyd, including marching in Dallas, and tweeting things like, “Stop killing us.”
Carroll is very much into this movement, and has been at the forefront of trying to get Colin Kaepernick a job.
And Seattle is on the front lines of the movement, including being home to a new region called: “CHAZ,” which is an autonomous zone formed by activists that is no longer part of the city.
So Carroll and Adams will be kindred spirits on this matter.
So for many reasons, while Dallas is mentioned the most, you could make an argument that Seattle could be the favorite.
