New Jersey – Time to empty out the notebook from the Jets three-day veteran minicamp that wrapped up on Thursday . . .
Brandon Marshall was brilliant this spring. He’s still at the top of his game at 32.
He’s as good as he’s ever been. I can’t tell you how many times this spring he was totally covered, air-tight coverage, and he still caught the ball.
Another example in yesterday’s practice.
Marcus Williams had great coverage on Marshall down the right sideline – right in his hip pocket – and Marshall still caught it, and in a game, Williams would have been penalized for the contact he made . . .
Charone Peake had a really nice spring.
He’s clearly caught the coach’s attention. He got some reps yesterday with the Jets’ starters when they went to a spread.
Very, very interesting prospect with good size and speed who is clearly better than a seventh round receiver . . .
The Jets signed former Arizona State WR Kyle Williams after a minicamp tryout and released Quinton Bundrage. He previously played for San Francisco and Kansas City.
His speed definitely caught my eye. He can flat-out fly. He ran a 4.34 at his Pro Day in 2010 . . .
This Breno Giacomini situation is odd.
Once again, he was in uniform yesterday, but Brent Qvale took the first team reps, and Giacomini watched.
Todd Bowles said that Giacomini was sore.
Then at the end of practice, Bowles had some fun with the team, where a lineman from each side of the ball caught a punt. Giacomini handled this for the offense, and Sheldon Richardson for the defense.
This is an age old tradition in the NFL in minicamps and training camps. Usually there is a reward for the side of the ball featuring the lineman who caught the ball. Both guys caught it.
That fact that Giacomini was picked to represent the offense might mean a lot or might mean nothing.
Giacomini is a great guy and a great teammate.
He’s very popular with the coaches, players, front office, the media and fans.
So that makes this situation even stickier.
But if the Jets finally reach an agreement with Ryan Fitzpatrick, they are going to have to create cap space somehow, and Giacomini’s $4.5 salary would probably be the perfect amount to take care of Fitz’a cap hit in 2016.
And Qvale can do the job.
Maybe catching the punt was a going away present, or actually a sign of commitment to Breno.
We will find out shortly.
But half of this practice was just a walk-through
And Qvale was getting reps in this.
Hey, Darrelle Revis was in the walk through as a starting corner, and he’s not 100 percent.
Walk-throughs are what team’s do the day before games, and they go in slow motion, like chess pieces, going through the plays. This is a mainly a mental exercise.
All I’m going to say is this doesn’t pass the smell test.
Hopefully I’m wrong. I don’t wish for anybody to get released.
We shall see.
