Cleveland – The Jets looked like they were in trouble today in Cleveland, but then exploded in the second half, and showed the kind of offensive firepower we haven’t seen since the Buffalo game . . .
Right tackle Breno Giacomini was definitely put in a tough place physically today.
He has been out since minicamp with a back problem. He was activated off PUP this week, and played today, platooning with Ben Ijalana.
But think about, he never had a chance to get into football shape. You get into football shape by playing football – hitting, tackling, preseason games. That really doesn’t go on during in-season practices. You can’t get in football shape relying practice.
So Giacomini went out there cold today, with no real football action prior to the game, and did a decent job.
But he ended up hurting his hand and his left shoulder (heavily wrapped leaving the stadium). He’s going to feel awful tomorrow.
Getting thrown right into football action in mid-season from the PUP list is no easy task. Running back Stevan Ridley had this problem last year. No off-season or summer work, and was thrust into action mid-season.
Getting Giacomini back is good for the Jets’ offensive line. It’s not that he’s so much better than Ben Ijalana. He’s not at this point (Breno had an average season in 2015). But he’s the vocal and spiritual leader of this line. It’s a pretty quiet group. “Boston Breno” gets his line-mates fired up, plays with an edge, and gives the line an attitude . . .
Very quietly, Wesley Johnson has turned into a terrific center. He did a nice job today again. The Jets didn’t miss a beat without Nick Mangold. The cerebral Vanderbilt graduate is getting it done mentally and physically . . .
When Josh McCown was in his prime, he had a rocket arm. Man, he has lost arm strength. That was pretty darn obvious today. Perhaps the broken collarbone contributed a little . . .
The Jets’ coaches have been getting destroyed for not making good halftime adjustment.
Today, they knocked it out of the park. They did a heck of a job . . .
Jets better get their pass rush going. They only had one sack today, and we know their pass defense is inconsistent. They are making those guys have to cover too long.
And they have to play the Patriots twice coming up. Weak pass rush and inconsistent coverage is going to get them destroyed, twice.
The formula to beat Baltimore (with seven starters out) and rebuilding Cleveland isn’t going to work when they step up in competition.
Lorenzo Mauldin has come on the last two weeks with some QB pressures, but they need to get something going on the other side.
Mike Catapano is playing a lot, and he’s having trouble shedding blocks. He gives you everything he’s got, but lacks quick twitch.
I’m telling you, Todd better come up with a new plan, because you can’t have anemic pass rush and an inconsistent secondary in a passing league. That is a recipe for disaster . . .
Matt Forte was getting treatment after the game for some kind of knee issue.
