Florham Park – So what do I think of the Jets second round selection of West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. Okay, where do I start?
First of all, there is no way he should see the field this year.
If the Jets start him this year, they are nuts.
He has a lot of potential, but he needs to sit and learn for a year, maybe two.
We have such an instant gratification society. Everyone is in such a rush. Playing quarterback in the NFL is very hard. Take your time – do it right.
Hey, he’s a second round pick – why the rush?
He’s not going to make a lot of money. If they rush him into action, they are making a huge mistake.
This guy needs to sit.
Carson Palmer sat, Aaron Rogers sat – this guy can sit, and learn from QB coach David Lee and offensive coordinator Marty Morhinweg, known as a good teacher of quarterbacks.
There Jets should go with David Garrard or Greg McElroy, and take their time with Smith. He’s the kind of prospect, if he’s rushed, he could be ruined, and never recover.
Not only does he need a lot of work on technique and reading defenses, but he needs to get stronger.
One thing I noticed seeing him up close at the combine – he’s very skinny, especially his legs. He looked like a guy who is going to get hurt unless he gets bigger and stronger.
People in the press room are talking about a quarterback controversy this summer involving Smith.
That is a joke. Smith shouldn’t even be in the conversation this year.
Not only is he a project, but he played in gimmicky college spread that doesn’t translate to the NFL. He got a adjustments from the sideline.
I know a lot of people realize I’m not high on this player, but I do think he’s worthy of bringing in as a project.
This pick probably signals the end of Mark Sanchez with the Jets.
I don’t think this can work anymore.
What happened at a recent Knicks playoff game was illustrative of why it’s going to be hard for Sanchez to continue here.
He was sitting on celebrity row, and when they showed on the Jumbo-tron, he was ravaged by the crowd. It was ugly.
His confidence is shaky right now, and the fans have turning on him, is only going to make it worse.
I feel bad for him, but I just don’t think this can work anymore.
They can’t sell him to the fans anymore. He’s not going to be able to make a mistake without getting destroyed by the home crowd at Met Life Stadium.
Tough town.
If the Jets designate him a June 1 cut, they can spread out the cap hit. The NFL has a relatively new rule where you can release a guy now, and call him a June 1 cut, so you don’t have to leave the player twisting in the wind.
So Geno Smith as a project who can help down the road – fine.
If they start him this year, they are writing off the season, and not showing a lot of vision.
And plus, John Idzik is huge on competition. So if you let the quarterbacks compete, Smith isn’t going to win the job.
He’s raw as molasses.
I think the Jets can have something here in a couple of years.
“I think Geno Smith will be the Week One starter,” Kurt Warner said.
That would be nuts.
I think Warner forgot that Garrard is here.
