Palm Beach – On Sunday, at the NFL’s Owner’s meeting in Florida, Jets GM Darren Mougey announced the Justin Fields is the Jets starting quarterback.
“We believe Justin is the starter,” Mougey said, “We believe in Justin — we believe we can win with Justin. So, we’re excited about Justin.”
Some would argue that if you are trying to establish a strong football culture, which the new GM is attempting to do, it’s best to promote open competition at every position.
As Bill Parcells liked to say, “Put away the anointing oil.”
It is unclear why the Jets named Fields, who has 14-30 record in the NFL, the starter on March 30, just a couple of weeks after signing him.
Some would argue, why not let veteran QB Tyrod Taylor, who has a 28-28-1 record, compete with Fields for the starting job?
Why Mougey is eschewing competition at the NFL’s most important position is unclear, but now the challenge is on Taylor, to work his tail off in the spring and summer to get up to Fields’ level as a player, and put some pressure on the GM to reconsider.
