Some thoughts on Adam Gase.
The Jets interviewed him today.
I wouldn’t necessarily put him first on the list, but he’s not as bad a candidate as some people would lead you to believe.
First off, let’s keep in mind that Ryan Tannehill was forced on him.
And in some ways, he was a like a ball-and-chain around the coaches ankle.
He’s another one of these quarterbacks who looks the part – good size, nice arm, very athletic, but doesn’t see the field well.
Gase had to work around the quarterback position – dinking and dunking like crazy.
If you don’t have an answer at quarterback, you are eventually going to get fired. And Gase got fired.
Another problem for Gase was his personnel department. They made a lot of mistakes.
They never should have given Tannehill a big money second contract. he didn’t earn it, and it painted the Dolphins in a corner. He had to start.
They traded with the Rams for DE Robert Quinn who has back issues.
They gave Ndamukong Suh big money and couldn’t stop the run while he was there. He was released last off-season and signed with the Los Angeles Rams.
They gave big money to Kenny Stills in 2017, a player whose activist activity caused a big distraction with that team. Whether you agree with Still’s politics or not, he was clearly a distraction. Not sure how many teams would have given a player who was a distraction in 2016, big money in 2017.
They picked WR Devante Parker in the first round in 2016, and he’s had little impact. He had a foot problem in college and hasn’t been able to stay healthy in Miami.
I’m not going to go up and down the roster, but that team’s personnel department did an an average job during Gase’s time there. The man who was running that department was just re-assigned.
Look, I’m not putting Gase in Canton, but he was handicapped by his QB position and personnel department in Miami.
I think Gase will do well in this second head coaching job if he has a QB and gets better support from his player personnel department.
It’s probably a long shot he ends up the Jets, but I think the criticism of the interview in Jets Nation is a little too strong.
He’s not a bad coach.
He was dealt a bad hand in Miami.
He’s got a top-shelf offensive mind.
In New York, he’d probably have to tweak his approach with the media. He bristled a lot with the reporters in South Florida. Not a good idea with the Jets.
Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly’s name has been connected to the Jets. This would be a problem with him also.
Look, I don’t think media relations should be in the top two or three reasons you hire a coach, but with this team, in this market, and with this group of reporters, it’s best to have a guy who doesn’t get into fights with the media. It’s just a bad idea.
I hear the New York Giants coach reads everything and is sensitive. Bad idea here.
I have said it before, and I will say it again – you go into the press conferences, answer the questions sans an attitude, and then get back upstairs and continue your football work.
You go into the daily press conference, answer the questions, even if they are horrible, with dignity and charm, and you leave and get on with your day.
Don’t make a big deal out of this.
Remember, you can’t control the questions, but you can always control the answers.
