It continues and continues to be meaningless . . .
The stories on who you should focus on at the combine continue.
Headline today from one New York area newspaper – “NFL Combine 2019: Top wide receivers for Jets to scout entering NFL Draft | Parris Campbell, N’Keal Harry, D.K. Metcalf, more.”
No, they should scout ever single wide receiver at the combine – every single one. That is why they spend millions a year on scouting – yes millions.
ESPN wrote – “We asked our NFL Nation reporters which one position their team should be focused on at the combine.”
This was followed by all 32 of their NFL Nation reporters giving their answer.
If I worked for ESPN, my answer would be – “Every position.”
Honestly.
So many Jets fans want them to trade for Antonio Brown. We can get into the pluses and minuses of this at another time, but let’s not forget Brown was a sixth-round pick out of Central Michigan, who proceeded to become the best receiver in football for a few years.
Once again, this is why they need to go over every player at the combine with a fine tooth comb, not just the ones some reporters are telling us they should focus on.
The Jets’ best rookie last year was fourth-round pick Chris Herndon.
Yes, he was better than Sam Darnold.
Darnold has a big upside, and the Jets could finally have their franchise QB, but Herndon was the top rookie. As you can tell, I was really impressed by him (aside from the DWI). To me, he’s a first-round quality tight end – good speed, runs solid routes, and has consistent hands. On top of that, he’s a heck of a blocker. He had myriad key blocks on Jets running plays and kick returns.
Who was writing entering last year’s combine – “The Jets to focus extra hard on Chris Herndon.”
Going into the combine with extra focus on a few prospects is foolish . . .
The most dominant Jets’ beat writer, who is like Secretariat on the Jets’ beat, had another big scoop today.
He announced the Jets are interested in wide receiver Donte Moncrief in free agency.
Now this certainly didn’t come from the Jets who aren’t going to discuss their free agent plans right now.
But his agent is Joel Segal. You do the math.
Segal has always been amazingly helpful to reporters, including some of the prominent national insiders.
The Jets should be interested in Moncrief.
They saw first hand what an explosive player he can be, when he beat their #1 cornerback, Trumaine Johnson, for a long touchdown in Jacksonville last year.
But this story, which is all over the internet, should not be considered a blockbuster. Mehta has a lot of blockbusters, but this is kind of blip on the radar story.
Why?
Because if they sign Moncrief, we aren’t talking about big money – probably something in the $1-2 million range.
Kind of like linebackers Kevin Pierre-Louis and Brandon Copeland last year.
So while it might happen, this isn’t a blockbuster, like the three he had last week on Williams-Vitt, Trumaine Johnson and Le’Veon Bell.
