He is clearly trying . . .
. . . to force his way out on social media.
Talking about Jamal Adams.
The New England Patriots signed QB Cam Newton on Sunday, and Adams sent out congratulations to the quarterback, and long-time Jets nemesis Bill Belichick, who left them at the altar in 2000.
“I salute Coach Bill Belichick for that!” Adams tweeted on Sunday. “That’s real. Congratulations Cam!”
What is that?
Clearly another attempt to agitate the powers-that-be at One Jets Drive to expedite his departure from Florham Park.
This approach has worked for star athletes before, like Jalen Ramsey, who “tantrum’ed” his way out of Jacksonville, to coin a new expression. It also worked for basketball star Anthony Davis, who got his wish to go from New Orleans to the Los Angeles Lakers via dirty pool. Ramsey even came up with a mysterious injury that kept him out of a few games, and magically returned to health when he got traded to the Los Angeles Rams.
As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
Adams clearly wants to get the heck out of Florham Park.
So don’t expect him to stop this social media war with the Jets. Actually, it wouldn’t be accurate to call it a war, because the Jets aren’t fighting back. They aren’t going to fight this battle publicly.
Adam Gase said asked over and over on Friday during a conference call with reporters about Adams, and gave a bunch of answers similar to this one:
“Anything that has to do with any contract will stay in house; it’s not something we will comment on publicly,” Gase said.
The Jets would only be willing to trade Adams if they get a generous offer in return. They aren’t going to give him away. Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network wrote last week: “I’m told right now that a player the Jets would ask for in a trade for Adams would be (Dallas) right tackle La’el Collins, that is the player they want. If you’re a Jets fans, you know one thing, you can’t start the season with Chuma Edoga starting at right tackle.”
Pauline did a nice job last spring being one of the first people to report friction between Gase and Mike Maccagnan. Many people shot that down, but Pauline ended up being right when Maccagnan was fired on May 15.
There is no doubt the Jets would be interested in Collins, but I have to respectfully disagree Tony about the last line about Edoga, who isn’t going to start (barring an injury), even if the Jets don’t get Collins. Barring a major upset, the tackles are going to be Mekhi Becton and George Fant, it’s just a matter of figuring out who is on what side. Also, you get the sense that Conor McDermott might even be ahead of Edoga on the right tackle depth chart.
But it’s highly unlikely Jerry Jones would trade Collins, who, along with left tackle, Tyron Smith, give Dallas perhaps the best pair of bookend tackles in football. Also, they lost their All-Pro center Travis Frederick to retirement this off-season, so there is little chance that Jones wants to worry about replacing two elite players on his line this summer.
I still think Seattle is a strong candidate here.
But whether it’s Seattle, Dallas or wherever, expect Adams to continue his Twitter and Instagram insults to get what he wants.
Welcome to the Brave New World of social media.
