Some are clamoring for the Jet to land this guy . . .
Some feel the Jets need to sign QB Derek Carr, who has a 63-79 record in nine seasons.
Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic announced early this week that the Jets view Carr as “a significant upgrade” over Zach Wilson. Why would they say something like that pertaining to Wilson who they are trying rehab? Strange. Why do that to his confidence? But also, if you have hit the reset button because you want to fix his mechanics, why does it matter right now if any veteran QB is “a significant upgrade” over him? It’s kind of irrelevant right now. They need to fix his footwork.
But reading the tea leaves, it might be hard for the Jets to land this coveted QB, who was benched by Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, after Carr went 6-9 as a starter.
It looks like the NFC South could have some of the leading candidates for Carr’s services.
Former NFL player Shaun King said to keep an eye on Atlanta.
The Carolina Panthers also make a lot of sense for the very devout QB.
“Do I think the Panthers get involved – yeah,” said former NFL GM Mike Lombardi. “I think they fit Carr’s personality. Frank Reich is from a very Christian background. There is no cursing in the Carolina Panther’s offices. That is how he’s always been. He’s very religious. So is Carr. They would probably get along really well. I’m sure that would be a good situation for Carr. Their offensive line is pretty good and they can run the ball.”
“[The Panthers] have a good offensive line – Taylor Moton on one side, and Ickey (Ekwonu) on the other,” said Brian Baldinger on NFL Network. “Frank Reich is a QB guy, so he understands how to work with him. I could see that union growing.”
And let’s not forget New Orleans, the only team that brought Carr in for a visit, before he was released by Las Vegas.
“You see Cam Jordan recruiting (Carr),” said Baldinger. “They have a good offensive line, a top 10 defense and Carr knows Dennis Allen – they worked together before (with the Oakland Raiders).”
Allen was the Raiders’ head coach during Carr’s rookie year.
“[The Panthers and Saints] jump off the page at me,” said Baldinger. “The Saints get (offensive tackle) Trevor Penning back. Both places make sense.”
Even though the Jets hired Carr’s former offensive coordinator Todd Downing as their passing game coordinator, you just don’t get the sense that the Jets are going to be at the top of Carr’s list.
And Jets fans should not get bummed out by this.
He’s a great guy, but an average QB, unless you think McDaniel is an idiot.
McDaniel released Carr with no clear replacement in the building. Jarrett Stidham who took over for Carr in the last two games is an unrestricted free agent.
Look, if Carr would cost you like $8-10 million a year, bring him in, but this kind of guy for $30 million a year, that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
