Mobile – Do they have the guts to pick him?
No question Josh Allen has a rocket arm, but his accuracy concerns scouts.
This was a concern entering the Senior Bowl and has continued in the Senior Bowl.
In today’s practice, he threw a mid-range crossing route to New Mexico State wide receiver Jaleel Scott that went way over his head. Scott is 6-5, so that makes this overthrew even worse. The guy has a huge catching-radius. He also threw a pick down field on an overthrow to tight end.
Look, I don’t want to make a mountain out of a mole hill, but based on these accuracy concerns, I don’t think the Jets can pick Allen with the sixth pick. They have two young quarterbacks already with accuracy issues, so why go down that road in the draft? There is a reason most of the top NFL quarterbacks are around 65-70 percent completion percentage. You need to be accurate to be a top-shelf NFL quarterback. It’s hard to sustain drive if every other pass is hitting the ground due to a QB around 50 percent.
Baker Mayfield on the other hand, is very, very accurate. You could see that in today’s practice, and during his career at Oklahoma.
Mayfield threw a perfect mid-range sideline route to Colorado State’s Michael Gallup on the right side in front of Mike Maccagnan who was watching from that sideline.
Now of course the Jets are going to need to vet this player and look into some of his character concerns.
But based on what I’m seeing here, the Jets are going to have to take a long, hard look at Mayfield at six.
There are rumors that the New Orleans Saints have a lot of interest in Mayfield. I’m sure that is because he probably reminds them to a certain degree of Drew Brees, a 6-0 quarterback with makes good decisions and is very accurate . . .
The Jets fired their offensive line coach Steve Marshall today.
Josh McCown was sacked 39 times this year in 13 games, with his season ending on a sack by Shane Ray that broke his left hand.
Marshall is more than competent offensive line coach, but his unit was certainly very inconsistent this past year.
However, when you consider that part of the spin given on why John Morton was fired, was him not running enough, well perhaps the run blocking wasn’t always great. Aren’t they admitting that by firing the offensive line coach?
Is this the chicken or the egg?
Morton is getting smeared for not running enough, but in many games, the run blocking was substandard, and they just fired their offensive line coach.
So if the run blocking wasn’t very good, what did you expect from Morton?
Clearly the Jets’ new offensive coordinator, Jeremy Bates, wants his own offensive line coach, and that is why long-time Denver Broncos assistant, Rick Dennison, who was in Buffalo last year, is likely going to land the job.
Because if Bowles, who hired Marshall in 2015, wanted Marshall out, he would have fired him right after the season.
So the fact that the move was made right after Bates was hired, makes it clear this was something the new offensive chief wanted?
With this being said, expect some additional changes to the staff . . .
