Nashville – What the Jets brass are doing is unfair to their defensive line, David Harris, Bilal Powell, Nick Mangold, their fans, and the list goes on.
This isn’t NFL Europe.
This isn’t a developmental league.
You know what is interesting. You always hear that rookie quarterback’s best friend is a good running game. Well guess what, the Jets have a good running game.
Bilal Powell ran 14 times for 66 yards and a 4.7 average before the Jets had to abandon the run because they feel so behind.
Last week the Jets were dominant on the ground against Buffalo.
But it doesn’t seem to be helping the youngster that much.
The Jets thought that if they went into Tennessee and stopped their running game, they had a good chance to win the game. The Titans are a true ground-and-pound team. They entered this game with the most rushing attempting in the league.
Well guess what, the Jet shut down the Titans rushing attack. Chris Johnson ran 15 times for 21 yards and a 1.4 average. He is one the league’s top backs. That is superb run defense. As good as it gets.
This is the most talented Jets defensive line I’ve seen in many years. They are really getting it done.
But talent might get wasted.
Along with some really good play by David Harris and DeMario Davis.
But that might get wasted as well.
Just like Powell’s breakout season.
Because it looks like the Jets are writing off this season to develop a second round quarterback.
Hey, whatever floats your boat.
I think that is no way to run a team.
I said it during the summer, and I stand by it – Let Greg McElroy, or somebody like that, manage the games, under Smith is truly ready.
He’s not ready.
“To me, I don’t think you can hand him the keys,” said Mike Mayock after the draft.
The Jets could easily be 0-4. Tampa Bay handed them the game, Buffalo was without both starting corners, their nickel and best safety, and the Jets still almost lost to them. The Jets were helped by the fact that the Bills had a raw rookie quarterback on Geno’s level.
Most people aren’t mature enough to deal with that I’m about to write, whether it’s people in the media or a lot of fans, so I’m just going to write it here, in the premiums section – Brady Quinn should be an option at this point.
I’m not putting him in Canton, but the guy has started 20 NFL game, played in 24, starred at perhaps the most pressure-packed college environment in sports (Notre Dame) – he can manage the game for you.
How could anybody, who is being fair, think that Smith is better than Quinn right now?
It’s foolish to have Quinn inactive, and have Matt Simms, who is also very raw, backing up Smith on game day.
You should have a veteran backing up Smith, as an option to replace him, not a guy just as raw as he is.
People are so dismissive of Quinn because things haven’t gone that well for him so far in the NFL. But it’s not like he was on any good teams, or was given a full season to show what he can do. He’s played here are there, on bad teams.
I know it’s not cool to stay Quinn should play, and cool people are dismissive of the notion, but he’s better than Geno right now. There is no doubt about it.
And the Jets are 2-2, and SHOULD NOT WRITE THIS SEASON OFF! They have a superb Front Seven, and can run the ball. That’s half the damn battle in this league.
The Jets and Tennessee are very, very even teams.
And the Jets lost 38-13.
That is ridiculous.
The rookie quarterback, who isn’t ready to play, had three turnovers in the first half which led to 21 points, and that was all she wrote.
Are the Jets committed to winning, or do they want to be an NFL Europe team, and develop a quarterback?
They are 2-2. It’s not too late to leave NFL Europe.
They can ask Quinn to manage the game, or they can steal McElroy off the Bengals practice squad, and ask him to do the same.
Or maybe Idzik is just willing to write the season to develop Geno (and there is no guarantee that time leads to development – David Carr, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, JaMarcus Russell, Joey Harrington, Trent Dilfer, and the list goes on). Maybe time does lead to Geno becoming really good, but there are no guarantees.
