Joe Douglas is right – there is really only one goal

Somebody recently asked a Jets coach if they should be expected to make the playoffs this year.

And the coach said that the goal is “always going to be playing in January.”

I have never agreed with the premise that making the playoffs is the goal in the NFL.

No, I agree with something Joe Douglas said after taking over as Jets GM:

“If you are not trying to win a Super Bowl every year, you shouldn’t be in this business,” said Douglas.

I’m not saying the Jets are going to make the playoffs or the Super Bowl this year, but that goal should be to win the Super Bowl every year.

Realistic or not, that should be the goal.

You should aim for the Lombardi Trophy every year.

At least that’s how I look at it.

Just making the playoffs is setting the bar too low.
