I don’t really understand where it’s coming from.
Over the last two week there have been myriad reports that the Cleveland Browns are going to pick Josh Allen with the first pick.
Look, it might happen, but I don’t really understand where this kind of information would emanate from.
Browns GM John Dorsey is a very tight-lipped guy.
He’s not telling anybody this.
Why would he?
That would serve no purpose.
Usually, when an organization leaks information about interest in a player it’s to create trade interest in that player.
But what team is going to trade up to #1 for Josh Allen, who had a 56 percent passer in college, and when Wyoming played Power Five Conference teams (tougher competition), he struggled.
Look, I’m not saying he shouldn’t go in the first round, but I don’t think teams are going to trade a king’s ransom to move up to the #1 slot to pick him.
Look, the Browns could pick him. I’m not saying Allen to the Browns isn’t going to happen, I just don’t know where it came from, because Dorsey’s a not a yapper, and plays things close to the vest.
Hue Jackson said this week, “I laughed at recent report that Josh Allen is the Browns guy.”
The reason I wouldn’t pick Allen at #1 is the accuracy issue. I have been told by coaches and scouts for years you can’t fix it.
The last two quarterbacks the Jets picked in the draft, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg struggle with accuracy, and not much has changed since they arrived in Florham Park.
The reason I’m writing so much about the Browns and Allen today is that if they do pick him, this could impact the Jets at three.
Because if the Browns pick Allen, and then the Giants select Saquon Barkley at two, then all of sudden the Jets have a choice of Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen at three.
Most didn’t think Darnold would be there at three.
Now I wouldn’t pick Rosen because of the medical concerns. I have mentioned this before. Another concussion or two and he could be done. He had two last year and his father is a doctor.
So Darnold could be there at three, something the Jets didn’t expect. Perhaps they brought him in for a last second visit because of the Allen-to-Cleveland rumors.
What would the Jets do then? I’m not going to say I know, but man that would be a tough call.
I think if it’s down to Mayfield and Rosen, I think the Jets pick Mayfield.
But if Darnold is there? Wow, really tough call.
However, in closing, I can’t believe that Dorsey, who was been scouting players for a quarter of a century, would pick an inaccurate QB, who struggled against tough competition, with the first pick of the draft.
I agree with former NFL defensive back Dustin Fox, now a Cleveland radio personality and columnist for the Athletic.
“I’m just going to come out and say it,” wrote Fox. “Sam Darnold checks the most boxes for the Browns as the top overall pick. We have analyzed this thing for weeks, breaking it down by watching film and talking to analysts across the country. As much as it pains me to say — because of how much I love Baker Mayfield — Sam Darnold should be the pick.”
I agree.
We will see what happens.
But if Darnold slips to three, Mr. Coffee is going to have a heck of a tough decision.
Darold is good, but he turned the ball over a lot of college. If he didn’t turn it over so much, this would be an easy decision for the Jets.
