FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – It is a time of transition for the rookies and undrafted free agents brought into Jets camp, with former Maine running back Pushaun Brown telling JetsConfidential.com that the biggest adjustment isn’t the play on the field.
“It’s the terminology,” Brown said. “We had some of the same things in college, it was just called something different. Right now I’m feeling things out.”
Brown, a 5’10 running back who tips the scales at 210 pounds, picked up blockers well in drills.
“Just learning to play faster,” Brown said.
While it was a rookie mini-camp, second year wide receiver Scotty McKnight, who did not play last year due to a knee injury, was on the field and shadowing the offense. During drills, he worked on his own with an assistant catching passes…
Wide receiver DaMarcus Ganaway is a big body, a definite possession type wide receiver. He was praised by the coaching staff and in particular by wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal for his routes. At one point, the vocal Lal said “That’s the best route I’ve seen all day.” Second round pick Stephen Hill was within earshot…
Former Albany quarterback Dan Dillela was brought in by the Jets for a pre-draft workout and is now a tryout player at camp. He showed good arm strength…
The other Ganaway, Terrance, is a definite big body who can ping around between the tackles. He has a low center of gravity and definitely squares his pads. He bears a resemblance to fullback John Conner in his looks and build…
Running back John Griffin out of UMass was speedy and has good hips. Special teams head coach Mike Westhoff seemed to like his ability to turn the corner on kick returns…
Third round pick DeMario Davis earned rave reviews from one member of the coaching staff, who stopped by to talk with the media present. The coach said “He’s a really good player, going to make an impact.”…
Davis also earned kudos from a locker room source who said that he’s going to bring a good personality to the Jets…
Wide receiver Kris Byrd out of Virginia had a nice one-handed catch on a low thrown ball from G.J. Kinne…
Tight end Hayden Smith has not surprisingly earned the nickname “Aussie” from the coaching staff. He lumbers a bit and seems very stiff, the byproduct most likely of the former rugby player being in over his head in terms of the speed and tempo of practice. This was the first time that Smith has ever worn a football helmet. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano was constantly yelling at Smith during blocking drills to “Finish him off!”…
It was a strong debut from the aforementioned Hill. The wide receiver is lanky as advertised but has a good stride and good hands. During 7-on-7, one of Kinne’s passes was batted up then deflected again and Hill jumped full extension to snare the ball before it hit the ground…
There wasn’t a standout moment from first round pick Quinton Coples but the defensive end showed well and was constantly a menace in the backfield. Head coach Rex Ryan, who ran the defensive drills for the most part, was consistently praising Coples.
Robert Griffin certainly doesn’t lack for confidence and will become one of the favorites of the media if he makes the team. He is already bristling at the constant questions about the name he shares with his former teammate and now Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. The guard out of Baylor did run a 5.19 time in the 40 at his Pro Day, a major reason why the Jets were intrigued by him…
Paul Cornick, a tackle out of North Dakota State, didn’t have pads on and didn’t practice…JetsConfidential.com spotted linebackers Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas in the team facility and Bart Scott was also spotted after a workout.
