Indianapolis – It’s time for a heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers from the combine. Let’s get into them . . .
We all know how much Marty Mornhinweg and Andy Reid loved to throwing to scat-backs in Philly. First Brian Westbrook and then Shady McCoy.
So this could be good for Joe McKnight.
Or the Jets could look to add one of those speedy, quick backs, who can be featured as a runner and receiver.
If so, Clemson’s Andre Ellington would be perfect.
“One of the reasons I like him is because at 195 pounds, he might be the best effort pass protection running back in the draft which really surprised me,” Mike Mayock said. “He squares people up, get after them, and typically you don’t see that from those 195 pounds, change of pace kind of back. So, Ellington, I’ve got him number three on my board at running back. I’ve got him higher than most people. Most people think he’s a third rounder. I like him in the second round.”
Ellington sounds perfect for the Jets, a team that needs more explosive weapons . . .
One team that can’t be left out of the list of potential landing spots for Revis is Denver.
They know that Peyton Manning has a limited window, so they are going to do whatever they can to push for a championship this year.
And they have an owner, Pat Bowlen, not afraid to spend money. They have great cash flow with a perennially sold-out stadium.
You already hear talk Manning is pushing for Dwight Freeney to sign with Denver.
If Freeney signs with Denver, to me, that sets up a trade scenario that makes a lot of sense – Revis for Elvis Dumervil (and a draft pick).
Playing 3-4 OLB under Josh McDaniels in 2009 in Denver – Dumervil had 17 sacks. He fits well into the position.
Dumervil just turned 29 and is one of the game’s best pass rushers.
The Broncos desperately need a shutdown corner. Champ Bailey doesn’t fall into that category anymore, and this really hurt him in the Baltimore playoff game . . .
Revis got into a nasty exchange on twitter today with Seattle’s Richard Sherman, and one writer had his back,
“Darrelle’s greatness isn’t measured by interceptions. Sherman knows that. Both are great players, but Revis stands alone,” tweeted Manish Mehta . . .
I saw a who’s who of Jets people at Newark Airport today. I went right by Rex Ryan on a moving sidewalk – he was going one way, I was going the other (there was no interaction). He was on the United Indy flight that left at 3:30.
On my United Indy flight – around 5:15 – the passengers included Marty Mornhinweg, Dr. Ken Montgomery, Ben Kotwica (Mike Westhoff’s replacement) and Aaron Glenn (pro personnel). There were other Jets doctors and personnel people as well.
It was a small commuter jet.
You know what, when you see all these different people, it puts a face on all the different guys who are fighting for their jobs with a new GM in town.
I know it’s easy to say, “fire this guy,” and “fire that guy,” but these are people with families and mortgages.
I’m not getting soft, but sometimes you have to realize that transactions involving people being fired isn’t all fun and games . . .
What about QB Mike Glennon to the Jets in the second or third round? He has the best arm in the draft, which would be good for the Meadowlands.
“Mike Glennon of Carolina State, his arm talent, his consistency, he takes too long to deliver the football,” said Mayock. “He makes bad decisions. He makes bad throws, but the arm talent is there. So during this process, are people going to fall in love with him?”
If the Jets do pick Glennon, they should take him as a project, not an immediate starter. This guy needs a couple of years of development.
