In this final installment of “Looking at the Films,” Dan takes an in-depth look at the play of the Jets secondary in their loss to the Washington Redskins.
His cover skills are well-documented, but it also looks like Kyle Wilson is a very sure tackler.
On the Redskins first offensive play, WR Joey Galloway caught a short pass in the left flat, and Wilson stopped him in this tracks after a gain of four. Early in the second quarter, on third-and-eight, Galloway caught a short pass on the right side, and once again, Wilson stopped him, not allowing any RAC, and the Redskins had to punt.
But Wilson did miss a chance to tackle RB Terrence Austin on a right side screen in the third quarter that gained 17 yards.
On the second play of the game, Santana Moss caught a quick slant between Wilson and Brodney Pool for a gain of 13. There seemed to be some miscommunication on this play between two guys who are still learning the defense.
Galloway beat Wilson over the middle for a gain of 20 yards in the middle of the second quarter.
On the Redskins second possession, Cromartie had air-tight coverage on an incomplete pass over the middle to Galloway. Also on the second possession, Cromartie picked off a Rex Grossman pass, down the left side, after a Sione Pouha tip, but the play was called back due a holding call on Cro. It was a terrible call.
On the second possession, Jim Leonhard (with David Harris) combined to stop RB Willie Parker for no gain. Also on the second possession, Santana Moss caught a 27-yard pass down the deep right side, in Leonhard’s vicinity.
Leonard and Wilson blitzed to share a third quarter sack.
Late in the first half, Moss beat Cromartie on a post route, but dropped the ball. He probably saw Brodney Pool bearing down on him. According to Rex, Pool was late coming over on this play, so the fact that Moss was wide open was more Pool’s fault than Cromartie’s. Two plays later, Cro had a PD over the middle to Galloway. On Washington’s first series of the second half, Cro had blanket coverage on speedster Brandon Banks down the deep right side. Banks, who can fly, got no separation.
While he missed one tackle, Pool looks like he’s better in run support than Kerry Rhodes. On Washington’s second possession, he shed a block attempt by WR Anthony Armstrong and stopped a Willie Parker sweep after just three yards.
In the middle of the second quarter, he missed a tackle attempt close to the line on a Parker gain of eight up the middle.
Eric Smith had a PD on TE Fred Davis on a square out in the early fourth quarter.
Banks beat Marquice Cole late on a 15-yard out.
James “Dig” Ihedigbo looks like he’s going to fill Wallace Wright’s role as the team’s top special team’s player. He had nice stops on the first and second kickoffs (on Banks), and had a crushing block on S Reed Doughty, helping Joe McKnight on his 27-yard punt return early in the fourth.
