People are praising Dwight Lowery for suggesting that Kyle Wilson get some starting reps, ahead of him, to help him prepare. There is more to it than that. Those lauding the selflessness of the move are missing what is really going on here.
As for first reported in Jets Confidential Magazine, Lowery asked Dennis Thurman to move him to safety in the off-season. He wasn’t being selfish, but realistic. He’s not fast enough to be a man-to-man cornerback.
He is the first to admit he didn’t play well in the AFC Championship Game. Bill Parcells has that great quote – “Know who you are.”
Lowery in his heart of heart believes he’s an NFL safety. He could probably survive as a Cover Two corner, but he is absolutely not a man-to-man corner. He doesn’t have the skillset for the job.
Lowery likes to face the quarterback and read his eyes. He could turn into a heck of a safety with his instincts and ball skills. From high school to junior college to San Jose State, he was an interception machine.
So why is Thurman ignoring than man’s heartfelt request to not play cornerback anymore?
Don’t say the Darrelle Revis holdout. With Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Drew Coleman, Marquice Cole, Bo Smith and Brian Jackson, they have enough cornerbacks on the field to hold them over until Revis returns.
You have to start wondering about the man who Rex calls, “the best secondary coach in the league.”
Last year Kerry Rhodes, Lito Sheppard, Drew Coleman and Lowery all played inconsistent football under his guidance. And he failed to realize how good Cole is, and failed to play him, even when the secondary was struggling, like in the AFC Championship Game.
Cole has looked outstanding this summer, once again the making the decision to keep his butt on the bench last year look shortsighted.
This summer, the secondary hasn’t look good. In Thurman’s defense, there are some new pieces, but I thought everything was great now that Rhodes is gone.
If I’m Lowery, I’m pissed off.
He asked for a position change, and for the most part it’s been ignored.
And he didn’t ask for the change for selfish reasons. He was being realistic about his own ability.
Rex keeps saying he doesn’t know why Lowery suggested Wilson start over him.
Well there you go, I just explained it.
