The Mullet Man shined . . .
Dan Feeney had two pancake blocks in today’s practice.
Some wonder if Feeney will keep the backup swing job with the addition of former Eagles swingman Nate Herbig.
But considering Feeney signed a 1-year deal for $3 million, and it’s all guaranteed, he’s not going anywhere.
They might keep both.
Herbig had a nice block on Solomon Thomas on the second level taking the defensive tackle to the ground . . .
The Jets recently signed former UVA guard Chris Glaser, and I was wondering where they would be playing him. It looks like they are trying him at center . . .
Chuma Edoga seems to be dealing with another injury. He’s had a rough injury history. Edoga was wearing a compression sleeve on his right leg . . .
Saw Quinnen Williams talking to Jets doctor Damion Martens today on the practice field.
Williams sat out with an ankle injury.
Williams is in a tough spot. He’s an undersized defensive tackle, who is a good player, but he deals with a lot situations where massive offensive linemen, who sometimes outweigh him by 30-40 pounds, take him to the ground, and this leads to some dings. He’s had some unfortunate injuries over the years. It has nothing to do with his toughness, but more just with his size. There are plusses and minuses to going with smaller, quicker defensive tackles. They are often really good at beating guards/centers into gaps and making plays, but if the guards/center get their hands on them, they too often take them to the ground . . .
With safety Lamarcus Joyner not practicing today, there was talk about Jason Pinnock replacing him.
While Pinnock has a lot of potential, not sure if going to him as the first safety in, if there is an injury, is a way to go yet. He’s still developing positional instincts.
But you get the sense in camp so far, that Pinnock has moved ahead of Ashtyn Davis in the safety pecking order . . .
Sauce Garder had a near pick on a pass on the sideline from Joe Flacco to Elijah Moore.
Flacco isn’t going to lose any sleep over this. He’s experimenting now with the receivers to get ready for the season. That is what camp is for, not stats . . .
Bryce Hall continues to make a lot of plays on the ball in camp.
He knocked a pass away late on a crossing route after Corey Davis seemed to haul it in.
While there has been a lot of criticism of the Jets’ 2020 draft, Hall in the fifth-round has turned into a steal. He slipped because of a serious ankle injury as a senior at Virginia. The Jets took a flyer on him, knowing he would not be healthy when he arrived. Now healthy, he’s clearly better than a fifth-round corner. Probably would have been picked in the second-third round if not for the injury . . .
Some people wondered what kind of mood George Fant would be in today after getting the news he’s moving back to right tackle with the arrival of Duane Brown.
Well, I can’t read his mind, but all I can tell you is that during a one-on-one pass rush drill, between the offensive and defensive lines, he was very loud cheering on longshot offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.
Just like him accepting a move back to right tackle, the way he cheered on Kelly, shows you what a team player this guy is . . .
Jets prized free agent guard addition Laken Tomlinson, displayed his excellent mobility on a running play, when he pulled to the second level and engulfed linebacker Quincy Williams.
On August 9, I wrote the following:
“Undrafted free agent wide receiver Keshunn Abram had a drop on a crossing route on a nice throw from Joe Flacco. Not saying he’s getting cut today because of that, but long shots need to walk on water, like Wayne Chrebet did in 1995. Anointed players can make a ton of mistakes. Most NFL training camps definitely have a caste system.”
Abram was cut today.
