Sounds like they are willing to pay him big money. . .
When you talk this way about a QB, it sounds like you are willing to pay whatever it takes to get him.
“They were pretty clear with him — they told him he’s a great quarterback, they told him he’s got a legit surrounding cast of players,” Dianna Russini said on “NFL Live” on Tuesday. “They ran top-to-bottom of why Derek Carr can step in here and take this team, not just to the playoffs, but to the Super Bowl.”
“[The Jets] made it super personal, too,” Russini said. “They said ‘We believe if you come to New York and win, you could be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.’
Some would argue that you can also go to the Hall-of-Fame if you play well for the Raiders one of the NFL’s iconic franchises.
“Thirty Raiders have been selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, including Owner Al Davis,” they wrote on the team’s website.
And did playing in New York help Giants QB Phil Simms get into the Hall-of-Fame? No, and he led the Giants to a Super Bowl win with one of the greatest performances by a quarterback in SB history. In a win over Denver in 1987, he completed 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards, setting Super Bowl records for consecutive completions (10), accuracy (88%),and QB rating (150.9).
Carr’s agency is very media-friendly.
“Carr has a very good PR machine out there where he will get his story to people out there to make it look like he was a lot of leverage,” said former NFL GM Mike Lombardi. “Pellisaro, Rapoport – all those guys – there all attuned to it. [The agent] is telling them what to say and the gullibility of the media, they just write what he says.”
Perhaps Carr’s camp views the Jets are an organization that can drive up the price for the QB who is 63-79 as a starter, create a bidding war.
The New Orleans Saints are clearly interested as the only team that hosted the QB before he was released, thinking they could work out a trade with Las Vegas. However, it never happened, and you’d have to think the contract was the problem.
What do you pay a QB who is 63-79 as a starter, had just one season with a winning record, and never won a division title in nine years?
Does the person who is leaking stuff to the media surrogates think that saying the Jets think they can win a championship with Carr, and that he could go to the Hall-of-Fame if he plays well for them, is going to alter the Saints or Carolina Panther’s view of the QB’s value?
That is kind of pollyanna thinking. The Saints, Panthers and whatever suitors are out there, will look at the film, and make an offer.
To pay this QB, who has played in one playoff game, $30-40 million a year is Kabuki Theater. It just doesn’t make any sense.
But desperate times can lead to desperate measures.
And this is a QB who can’t put a team on his back. He needs a strong supporting cast to succeed. He’s not Patrick Mahomes. So if you spend too much on his contract, it could preclude you from providing him with the supporting cast he needs due to cap constraints.
