It’s been well-documented that the Jets need a cultural reboot.
And in making that happen, something that needs to be considered is why, when so many players depart, there is so much bad blood on the way out.
Of course, teams are going to move on from players every year. It’s a tough part of the business.
But it just seems like when people leave the Jets, it’s too often a nasty divorce, not just a run-of-the-mill waiver move.
They are about to move on from WR Allen Lazard. You hear people talk on Twitter (X), it’s like they are moving on from somebody on trial at The Hague.
Why? He was pretty good last year – the TD catch in London was sweet, as was the Hail Mary catch and the dead-play touchdown after a defensive penalty. The year before, he struggled a little with a string of QBs who were not very good – often throwing late and off-target. With a good QB last year, he was fine. He had a few drops, but so did Garrett Wilson. It happens.
But whether it’s former players or coaches, it just seems like the departures from 1 Jets Drive are too often filled with animus. Every former OC seemed to leave as a war criminal, including a father and son.
Hey, whatever happened to David Harris? Have you seen the beloved linebacker around since his release in 2016, almost a decade ago? Bad ending, bad feelings.
This is another part of the culture that Aaron Glenn, Darren Mougey and Rick Spielman must change.
Once again, players are going to be cut, but when players leave in the future, instead of departing with such a bad taste in their mouths, the feeling should be more like, “Hey, it happens – it’s a business, but I loved my time there. I wish them nothing but the best.”
