NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport had a huge scoop today, a blockbuster, that Marty “unequivocally sides” with Geno in the quarterback competition . . .
This story could possibly do irreparable damage to the Mark Sanchez-Morhinweg relationship.
How can Mark ever truly trust Marty ever again?
Especially since Mark clearly won the quarterback competition this summer. He was the better player throughout training camp, and aside from a couple of very bad plays in preseason games, Mark had the edge in the exhibition games.
So if Mark was the better player all summer, how could he possible respect a coach who wants the other player to start, even though Mark beat him out?
You almost get the sense that Marty wants to be Dr. Frankenstein here, and take on this Geno project and make him great, and perhaps that can elevate Marty to another head coaching job.
But if this story is true, John Idzik needs to call Marty into his office and read him the riot act. Now I don’t think Marty was Rapoport’s source, but clearly he got it from somebody Marty was talking to.
Look, I don’t want to turn into Magnum P.I., but I did see Marty talking to a ton of different Philly people before the game – players, coaches and broadcasters on the field. Maybe it leaked out then.
Idzik has to be livid.
How on any level is this story helpful to the team?
I’ve always been amazing by the NFL Network.
It’s a league owned entity that constantly puts member clubs in bad spots either with analysts ripping players and coaches in an over-the-top fashion, or scoops like this.
This network is way different than the NBA, MLB and NHL Channels.
I can’t wait for Marty’s Thursday presser. He is going to get grilled by the media.
Not only about how this got out, but why he would “unequivocally side” with Geno Smith after watching him this summer in camp and against the Giants? Hey, it’s his right to side with Geno, but “unequivocally,” after watching the raw QB’s work this summer? That seems a little strong .
I know the Jets are going to deny this story up and down, but Rapoport is pretty good. There is a very good chance this is true . . .
The Jets’ left guard situation is still a major question mark.
The team surprisingly released Stephen Peterman a few days ago.
While he’s not a great athlete, he’s a seasoned-pro who knows what he is doing out there.
The Jet started Brian Winters against the Philadelphia Eagles (backups) and he struggled.
LB Chris McCoy beat him for a sack on the first series. On another early play, it looked like he failed to pick up blitzing LB Sam Acho on a sack, and then he had a false start late in the first half.
That time he missed with a high ankle sprain really set him back.
It looks like Vlad Ducasse might start at left guard by default.
It’s possible the Jets could bring Peterman back after Week One. With veterans, clubs don’t have to guarantee their salary for the entire season if they aren’t on the opening day roster . . .
