People got way ahead . . .
. . . of themselves with the narrative that the return of Sam Darnold was the panacea for the Jets.
Not so fast.
He’s a heck of a prospect, but still has a lot of work to do, as you saw on his four picks in the first three quarters.
Bill Belichick’s defense has a history of being a nightmare for young quarterbacks, and Darnold is no different.
Last week against Dallas, the Jets were playing against one of the more simple schemes in the league. Dallas likes to load up on athletes and let them fly to the ball. It’s not the hard to dissect the Dallas defense.
New England is like a Rubik’s Cube – very hard to decipher.
And not only is New England hard to deal with due to their complexities, but this is one of the best defenses they have ever had.
They are #1 in the league for a reason.
Just like Luke Falk in the first meeting, they had Darnold struggling with what he was seeing. He was no better than Falk.
The Jets social media department and some people in the media need to chill out on the Darnold hype and let the kid develop without putting him in Canton prematurely.
Calm down over-hyping a kid still learning the why’s and wherefore’s of being an NFL QB.
I saw a QB tonight consistently trying to throw to receivers who weren’t open, because he so desperately wanted his first read to be open, and didn’t want to turn his head anywhere else.
He needs work on seeing the field well.
“I am seeing ghosts,” said Darnold who was wearing a mic for ESPN.
Why is the second-year developing QB wearing mic? Doesn’t he have enough on his plate. Bad culture move.
Darnold wasn’t better than Luke Falk against the Patriots this year, and Falk played them on the road in Foxboro. This game was at home.
“[Falk] is what he is and right now that is not a starting quarterback in the NFL,” wrote the New York Post after the Jets’ loss in Philadelphia. “He belongs on the practice squad, where he was before Darnold was diagnosed with mononucleosis. Would Falk have played better if he had been given the lion’s share of the reps this week? Maybe slightly, but he had all the reps before the Patriots game and how did that go?”
Better than Darnold tonight.
And Falk didn’t play well at all.
You know what, it’s time for Adam Gase to step up his game as coach.
He probably feels he was left a lousy roster by the old GM.
He probably feels that he has a lot of injuries.
But as Tony Dungy always said, “No Excuses, no explanations.”
Gase needs to do a better job coaching this team.
He can’t blame having Luke Falk as his quarterback for this debacle on Monday Night Football.
He needs to stop being so chummy with the media, stop worrying about Kelechi Osemele’s MRI’s, and focus on coaching his team better . . .
